Not with programs like Eraser (a brilliant 35-pass, DOD-strength file-erasure program) and any decent disk utility cleaning program, such as JV-16 from Macecraft. The last resort is wiping the drive clean and starting over.

When is it a good idea to do that? Except for geeks who just like tinkering, the average user may have to do it only once --- or should. That's before selling or discarding the machine, to be 100% sure all confidential stuff is now wiped. When you hit "delete," you are not deleting, just allowing that sector to be re-usable.

Coming back full-circle. Is erasing a journal ever a good idea? Probably not. I've stored things for decades and every s often I do return, to read and re-think what I said. I keep amazing myself how bright I used to be before I got older and wised up.

Personally, I just run over my old hard drive with a tractor a few times. Grin

Back to the OP a moment....

Journal software is fine, but it's also proprietary, meaning anyone who tries to read your work must also install that same software to read it. (Systems like Blogger, Moveable Type and others rely on different methods, but usually require an on-line hosting company to distribute your work).

Journaling per se can also be done using the common Wordpad word-processing program available through Windows. These documents can be read by almost everyone. Another excellent free word-processor program is Abiword (virtually identical to Wordpad but with a nicer-looking interface). Then of course there's the Rosetta Stone for documents in the business world --- the pricey but very-full-featured Microsoft Word program.

More than a year ago, I read there were an estimated six million blogs (of all types). Writing is not enough for those who do want readers (and to expand their readership base). It does take time to build up a body of work, and then establish contacts within the blogging world so they will link to your blog on their own sites.

Whether you jump straight in and produce journal entries, blog posts, essays, or whatever you want to call them --- it all comes down to content and your approach to your material. Nobody but you should decide that. But (in my view) it does help if you don't put roadblocks in the way by using software to produce documents (or files) that few other can read.
