Just got a hold of this book.  It has become wildly popular in spite of the support of a Christian publishing marketing machine.  anybody else read it?  I'll let you know what I think of it when I'm done.

My girlfriend just got through reading it for her book club. She had a few issues with it. She wants me to read it (mainly to get my take on the Trinity, as portrayed in the book), but I don't read much fiction anymore.

Just finished it.  It's "fiction but not really fiction."  Kind of like if you read "The One Minute Manager."  The "lessons" are woven through a narrative (usually a bit poorly).

I found the theology to be almost completely right-on (although it may be a stretch for some who are more familiar with sermons than scripture, if you know what I mean).  The narrative is quite good at the beginning and the end, but in the middle it's pretty pedantic with the chapters seemingly laid out in "teaching episodes" and the conversation seeming forced some of the time.

I think it would probably be quite the eye-opener for many a Christian and they might have to wrestle through the material, but for the most part, I believe the material to be sound.  It would be interested to have a conversation from others that have read it.

Hmmm....

Maybe we could start a Christian book reading club.  Of course, I would need a couple of weeks at least to read them, I am too busy posting on blogs... LOL

Then we could set a time and date to start a thread discussion on it.

Or not...

I will have to look into reading these books now so I can hold an intelligent conversation on them here.

That's been tried with movies in the Entertainment Forum and it didn't fly.  I think we just leave the thread until people choose to read the book and comment on it.

so i finally read it a few months ago and it's well done.

i know some of the issues that are likely raised with it, but i don't think they're that important.

that the image of God closely resembles the Oracle from The Matrix.

the book presents God as Mother rather than Father, but all things considered it makes sense, given the context of the protagonist's life.  and since God works within context, i think it holds together well.

i hope most readers weren't expecting a burning bush.  it would be more Biblical, but less culturally relevant (to the protagonist or to the reader).
