Leaky pipe
Sep 13th, 2008 at 3:16pm

Sorry if this has already been discussed.

I have a leak under my kitchen sink.  It is at one of the rings.  It is a slow leak.  I can just barely feel the water.  However the ring moves freely.  What do I do?

If I can't fix it, and I have to call someone, I'd at least like to know what they are telling me is accurate.  Thanks.

Is it the drain pipe, or the faucet?
...
Either way, try tightening the locking ring with your fingers.
If you can, and the leak slows down, then finish tightening it with a wrench.
There is no need to tighten it as much as possible, just snug it up.
If, it is a pee trap to the drain, then use a household drain cleaner and that may stop the drip.
There may be something causing the water to stand in the pipe causing it to drip until it drains down.
Probably a few ounces worth, and then it stops on its own.
Does that sound about right?

If that doesn't help, go through these images and select one that most looks like your issue.

Okay, Solar, it is those things that have the lines down them, that are not marked with any names.  the little rings with lines on the pipes.  I did try to tighten it with my fingers, but it just seemed to move up and down, and not get any tighter?  Is that normal?

Eidt:

Okay, I tightened what I THOUGHT was the leak.  But, it wasn't.

It is up by the very top.  It is leaking out of the bottom of the little ring (sorry, don't know the name) with the lines.  But, that ring is tight.  Or at least it appears to be. I can't manually tighten it.  Do, I do the cleaner?

Feel free to use the drain cleaner at anytime, in any sink, as a preventative measure.

I have to assume it isn't the one with a great big U , but the two vertical pipes in the pic I posted.
With that being the case, I have no idea what would slide up and down freely that would have water in it, unless it is a disposal overflow.
Can you take a pic and have someone post it for you?
I have no doubt we could help you fix it on your own and save some money in the process.

It sounds like it might be a vent pipe or something.
Like this pic?

A picture would be extremely helpful if possible. If you want, you can email me one and I can post it.

That being said, are the pipes plastic or metal?

Okay, the leak is where you have circled on the left as I look at the picture.  But, my pipes are opposite.  The top is like a chrome/silver look, and the other is PVC.

And I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but the leak is really slow.

Well then that's good news that it isn't the water supply.
Most likely you can use drain cleaner, because it sounds like you have standing water in the pee trap,( the U shaped thing).
I would suggest you get a bucket and place it under the trap and unscrew it from both ends and take it out, about a cup of water will drain out, or more depending on how much water is backed up in the other drain line from the other sink. I assume it is a double sink.
Anyway, once you get it off, make sure there is no blockage, if it looks clean, then the problem is further down the line.
However, once you've cleaned it up, put it back together, you may use some silicone spray if available, or a tiny bit of Vaseline on the threads, just to help it go together smoother. It will also allow the threads to tighten a bit more and act as a seal against leaks.
After all of this is complete, the leak should have stopped.
If it hasn't, try the drain cleaner, so as to clear any left over blockage down the line.
You can do this a couple of times a year in all of your drains as a preventative measure.
let me know if you need more info.

If the ring thing youre reffering to has flat sides on it like a nut I would say youre strainer nut has  stripped threads .

becouse if you turn it and it never tightens its stripped.
