TR survey - What OS would you install on a new PC?

Linux comes in second!  Windows 7/Vista @ 53%, and flavor of Linux @ 22%, XP @ 18%, and MAC OS @ 5%

This is out of 4,263 votes....

Linux is the best choice if you have to install 1 or more workstations at your company or organization (notice the 1 or more? hahaah)...

Despite the amount of Microsoft and Windows bashing we saw in the Discussion Forum associated with this poll question, over 50% of the more than 4,000 respondents would use Windows 7 for their operating system. More surprisingly, at least if you judge by the grossing in the forums, is that Windows XP is the distant third choice behind Linux.

One anecdotal conclusion we can draw from the discussion forum following this poll is that many of the respondents would likely use a dual-booting system. It would seem that IT professionals don’t like to be boxed in to only one operating system.

I'd say more would choose Linux if there was support, and if you had a choice at time of purchase.
I know that is changing, I think Dell offers a choice now, but doesn't offer support for the operating system.

Linux vs. Windows sys admins are pretty comparable, both in the $70k-$80k range...

I've installed Linux pretty much exclusively on all my box's for years, I pretty much only run Windows for testing purposes only and those are usually run in VMWare.

But I currently am running Win 7 Ultimate on my Netbook for a couple of weeks just for familiarization only.  Then of course it'll be back to running Linux.

I must say though Win 7 is the best MS OS they've released, but it's still Microsoft and there are much better options available.  Wink

I like the control of a Linux environment.

Very much so, the amount of tools and options you have to customize to your needs is where it's at.  Now you can easily just run with the base install/config which my father and a number of others do, but the options are there if you so choose.  Plus you don't have to spend a fortune on proprietary software.  Now I do own proprietary software for Linux, Nerolinux and Ultraedit Linux but the base software works fine for most.

Also another major advantage is you don't have a zillion crap installed like Windows.  For example drivers and other programs that load extra shit like toolbars, call home tasks, etc.

People aren't "choosing" Windows.  They buy a computer with Windows already on it.

Software development is a breeze in Linux.

In general, sure, but the survey was about a fresh new PC.

Exactly, and you don't have to pay the obscene amount of money for crap like Visual Studio, scripting is a breeze also for *nix not to mention 100x more secure.

Back in my days in the Anti Virus business we called VB (Visual Basic) "Virus Basic", Microsoft just makes it too easy to write virus's, trojans, worms and malware for.
