Microsoft Security Essentials resets updates
Jun 28th, 2010 at 11:00am

Microsoft Security Essentials automatically resets your PC from when YOU want to download and install updates, back to the default Feed Me the Entire Deeply-Flawed Botched-from-the-git-go Mess.

Um---that's got a fix. It's just the installer that does this, and you CAN re-set your Updates to however you want.

Microshaft still accounts for 80% market-share for all computers sold in the U.S.---as deeply flawed as their infamously-bad Patch Tuesday debacle has proved. This merely points out the resetting was done for those who had settings for other times or download status.

Now, I'll grant you that the first-adopters got all the arrows in their backs wading through this increasingly bizarre menu of possible Linux platforms. I'll grant you that for someone who's geeky, Linux is fun to tinker with.

Most PC users are not geeks. That should be news to geeks who assume everyone speaks Geek and understands how to resize images with GIMP as you fire off a Tweet or a forum-flame, using open-source Mozilla. Some people LIKE "download and install all." Others do not.

Thats me quiller, although I spend quite a bit of time on the thingy. My hobby is photography and I spend quite a bit of time camping in the mountains of the NW... as a result I have been a G4 powerbook kinda guy. It allows me to do my picture taking during the day while hiking the back country and do my editing in the evening back at camp.

When I first got started about 1999 I was told the Apple set up was the way to go, more user friendly and less problems than the Windows route. people told me the majority of graphic designers and movie folks preferred the Apple equipment, so it seemed the way to go for my hobby of digital photography and video. It has been fun and I've had almost zero problems.... my updates from Apple have always been trouble free and the only time I've had to have my laptop repaired was because of a latch malfunction that needed replacement. Apple sent a box to pack it in, picked it up at my doorstep and gave me a turn around of 5 days.... NW to Cupertino and back.

Anyway I enjoy reading you geeks experiences and from time to time learn something helpful for my own experiences  Smiley

Mac made a smart move by basing OSX on BSD, even though they Mac'ified it it's still based on Unix.  Those changes they've made opened up some holes but it's still a very good and secure OS compared to Winbloats.

Me, things I can't stand about the Mac

One button mouse, give me a break
Paying way too much for the hardware
Vendor lock in
DRM everywhere

Linux fit's the bill well, it may not be Unix but it's Unix like and there is a ton of open source software out there so I don't have to pay for 99% of my software.  The only software I pay for is

1.  VMWare Workstation
2.  Nerolinux
3   Cross Over Office

I did use Moneydance for a while which is a great alternative to Quicken

Anyway for gaming, I have an Xbox which I rarely play but it is nice once in a while, especially on my 58" Plasma Wink

Graphic editing - The Gimp
3D Graphic's - Blender
Music - Exaile ( a lot of people use Amarok )
Office package - Open Office
email - claws-mail

The list goes on and on, I've converted a large number of people over to Linux and almost all have stayed with it.  A wide range from Power Users to basic users, works well for them.

Cheers

You don't have to be a geek to use Linux nor are you forced to use GIMP to resize images.

Paint.Net has been ported to Mono and will cover most of what you need.

http://www.webupd8.org/2009/09/paintnet-for-linux-paintmono.html

Look, you don't even have to install it on your system. Just download the Linux Mint ISO, burn it to disc, and give it a try. No HD partitions to worry about.

The new "no button" mouse pad on the laptop is amazing.  I have a hard time going back to a PC laptop.

Most just Google for the answer or you can purchase support.

Where do you go if you have problems for Mac or Windows?  Wink

I have a local retail outlet that are certified Apple folks (probably employee's from the bankrupt CompUSA)... haven't had to use them yet cuz of the stable platform Apple uses, but they are there just in case. Also there is chatter that Apple is getting ready to put one of their retail stores in a recently shuttered Eddie Bauer store beings the Cuppertino folks are dealing on the property as revealed by real estate source ?
