Nice? Seems like a game that's potentially in my wheelhouse.

Was released today.  It's downloading as a digital purchase in the background as I type this.

After playing the actual game for awhile I'll let you guys know my thoughts.  I know there's a lot of Total War fans here.  It kinda looks like I may finally have a replacement for Medieval 2.  I've played the death out of that game over the last few years.

Shogun 2 is good times.  It's different than other Total War games I've played.  Can't expand fast.  First turn I took my entire army and took a neighboring province that I was already at war with.  I've spent every turn since trying to recover from that clan counter attacking me along with his ally attacking me.  Finances are tight and managing money is much harder.  Can't just put max tax rate and garrison it with enough troops to keep em down.  You max out your tax rate and it's not just happiness you have to worry about, you also have to worry about it slowing town growth.

Groovy game so far.  Keep in mind this is about 3 hours of playtime yesterday afternoon.  Interesting new changes are being able to assign your generals offices like "Minister of War" gives a boost to his recruiting and attack abilities, "Minister of Agriculture" (or some such names I don't remember) and it boosts farm production in the province he's a governor.  Etc etc.  Plus they level up.  Every time they get a command star it's a level, and they get points you can assign to various traits.

Also there's two research trees.  War and Civics.  You can research things ala' civilization.  Like War you can branch down into things like "Way of the Sword" or "Way of the Spear" ... gives new sword or spear recruits 1 experience level, and allows building of special buildings.  You can research "Equal Land" in the civics tree and be able to build terraced farms.

Lot of meat to the game.  Seems harder than Rome TW or Medieval 2 TW, (didn't play Empire enough to compare) but I just haven't gotten the trick of it down yet.  Still not even sure what some things do.  Instruction manual?  Pah that's for wusses.

Played a few turns over lunch today.

First time I've ever in a TW game had the enemy sneak a couple of light cavalry units around my flanks and leave them sit awhile to try a sneak attack on my general.  It actually worked it was so unexpected.  I wanted to see that again so I reloaded the battle and started over and watched for it this time.

Interesting.

Generals are fragile in this incarnation.  They're not combat units.  If you hear "Your general is in danger!" it might already be too late.

Took a 3rd province on my last turn, one that supplies good cavalry horses.  Next turn a huge army from said 3rd province's ally appeared on my new border.  Uh oh...  Then I had to get back to work.

That province may have been the most satisfying victory I've ever had in a Total War game.

The enemy ... 6 units of samurai swordsmen, 1 unit of light cavalry, 4 units of spearmen, and 4 units of bowmen.

Vs.

Me....2 units of samurai swordsmen, 6 units of spearmen, and 4 units of bowmen.

I retreated from the province I had just taken, back across the river.  Both because his samurai would have destroyed my spearmen in melee combat as my stronghold had few defenses and was assaultable from all sides ... and to give my general more time to replenish his depleted forces from his last battle. (Troops slowly replenish with time in Shogun 2...you can't just hit reinforce and train new troops to replace lost ones)

So I set up across the river, he took the city and continued marching.  I ambushed him at the river, and despite his superior forces with the use of the new slow motion button I was able to micro manage my troops, running my general back and forth across the battlefield to inspire my troops to the point where I demolished his superior forces.

His army retreated.  I advanced and destroyed them to the last man. Then marched back across the river.  Used my ninja to sabotage the castle gates and marched into the castle destroying his token garrison to retake the province.  In the process my general gained another command star becoming a 4 star general ... who fights as a 5 star while on land, and 6 star while laying siege to castles.

A couple turns to regroup and I will advance on the foolishly now defenseless clan who dared to try to attack me while I was weak.

I am enjoying the shit out of this game.

Okay.  So on my last update I had destroyed the backbone of my enemy's forces.  It was a simple matter from there to steamroll his two remaining provinces as he had small forces left in each.  On taking over the last one I had the option of leaving him free and making him a vassal.  But I decided I'm too much of a control freak and I killed off his last family member.

So now I controlled 5 provinces.  I decided to consolidate for awhile.  I've conquered everyone who started a war with me.  So I spent a few turns building up my infrastructure.  New roads for faster travel, upgraded farms.  Upgraded a few stables to warhorse farms for better cavalry.

And suddenly there was a rebellion.  An army appeared on the edges of one of my newly subdued provinces.  One of the family members had apparently escaped and was back with an army 1100 strong.  I had left most of my army in the new provinces so it was a simple matter to combine forces under my war commissioner (my strongest general) and head him off in the fields.  But not before he raided and destroyed my port.  Grr.  Well he paid for it dearly.  I didn't end battle when the enemy routed I chased down every miserable miscreant with cavalry and killed them all.  No more rebellions from that province by God.

So now what?  The only other clan that shared the island I was on was now friendly with me due to our long trade relationship.  He was pushing and expanding the other way onto the mainland, so all of his cities near me were barely garrisoned.  I had two choices.  Attack my friend...which decreases my daimyo's honor, or use transports and ferry troops somewhere to invade another clan.  Easy choice as two of my "friend's" provinces are required for me to attain victory.  I spent a few turns exploring with a naval ship, encountering new clans and setting up trade agreements with those who were willing, while I moved my forces around to prepare to invade the Ouchi clan.

I broke the trade agreement.  Well that fixed everything.  He was so pissed off at me that my relationship was now "unfriendly".  So I just marched up the coast, leading with my ninja and sabotaging the gates of cities along the way.  I'd occupy the cities then make them exempt from taxes to keep the people happy so I could move on with my army and simply recruit garrison troops.

Every step of the way my former friend was suing for peace.  I took the rest of the island and then I accepted his request for a peace treaty.  And now there I am.  8 provinces under my control.  I have achieved enough fame that the Emperor is watching my progress ...meaning soon the Shogun will consider me a threat soon enough.

Good times.

Is the demo a free download?  Still available?  Standalone, or an expansion?

The demo is a free download.  Let's you play a few campaign turns and invade a few neighboring provinces.  Everything I've shared above has been with the full release of the game.  I bought it on release day simply because I enjoyed the demo so much.  I believe the demo is still available.

http://www.totalwar.com/

On the right side has a download demo option.

And it's standalone.  Shogun 2 is a reboot of the old Shogun with new graphics and taking everything they've learned in every game they've released since.  The original Shogun was the first Total War game and pretty groundbreaking at the time.
