Game of Thrones, now that it's Arrived
Apr 18th, 2011 at 12:25pm

Sunday night, Game of Thrones debuted on HBO.  I was of course aquiver while I watched the whole thing.  One might almost say I felt a tingle shoot down my leg....

But as I watched it I thought of the uninitiated watching.  And I realized that it might be a very hard series to get into if you haven't already seen the show.  This is a huge story.  It takes time for the characters to develop, and for you to learn who everyone is in the story.

If you tried watching last night and just thought "OMG this is slow and boring" ... just try hanging with it for a few episodes.  It might sneak up on you.

As a "Song of Ice and Fire" zealot I have to say I thought it was pretty well done.  In particular the actress who played Daenerys Targaryen did a masterful job of showing in her face everything that the character in the book was thinking.

I don't give it 100% thumbs up, I just thought the Daenerys character deserved a special mention.  More like 75% thumbs up.  Assuming I have 100 thumbs I guess.

I mean, all you'd really need is 4 thumbs.

I really hope this series succeeds. I know you'll be upset with me, but I am ultra-addicted to buying premium cable shows on iTunes so that I can watch them when I fly on my iPad (I fly a lot). I don't have HBO. I won't watch this one until later.

I hope the creators and the HBO powers-that-be wait to see how DVD and iTunes sales come in after the first season, instead of just watching the week-to-week ratings. I have a feeling this will be a large hit on the DVD markets.

I hate waiting weeks to watch something when I want to watch the next episode immediately. TV, in that fashion, is evolving, with DVRs, iTunes, and DVDs.

NOOOOOOOOOoooooooo!

Well when you get a chance to watch it, let me know your thoughts.  In the meantime I'll refrain from saying anything else that might be spoiler-ish material.

One of the reasons I hooked up HBO right before this show came out is to hopefully add to the numbers of people who might be doing the exact same thing.  It didn't even dawn on me to just buy them on ITunes.  That would be a hell of a lot cheaper.  Might have to look into that.

That's precisely why I seldom watch TV and instead am always a season behind on shows I enjoy.  I wait for the DVDs to come out and buy em so I can watch binge and watch 8 hours in a day if I choose to do so.  (My wife and I were terrible with 24.  I think our record was 12 hours of back to back episodes on a Saturday)

Sounds like me with Dexter and Deadwood.

BTW: Have you checked either of those out? Great shows.

Just starting The Wire, and couldn't be more impressed with it, seeing as I'm not big on Cop shows.

All of them have that moral ambiguity, that ability to turn normal television and entertainment mores and norms on their head. The bad guys are bad, but there are some good ones who got caught up. Cheering for villains in certain situations. Etc.

A friend suggested I watch Dexter, he's a big fan.  I gave it a try but was just turned off by the overacting sappiness of his relationship with his "girlfriend's" kid.

Then I read one of the novels.  It was great.  In the same way that a John Sandford or James Patterson novel are great.  Light, funny.  And it made me realize .... of course he's overacting.  He's pretending.  He's an actor ...pretending to act like a human being.  And once I started thinking about all the different levels on which that is absolutely brilliant, I realized I gotta go back and give Dexter another shot keeping that in mind.  Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Haven't looked into Deadwood or The Wire.  Gotta finish the last two discs of the  2nd season of "Castle" to play the look-for-Firefly-references game.

According to wikipedia, strong viewership and critical acclaim from the 1st episode has led HBO to commit to at least the second season.

Great news, as it gives a chance for DVD and iTunes sales of the first season to show higher profitability.
