Syria - The West`s Greatest Fear

By Dan Glazebrook
May 05, 2012http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2012/1096/op8.htm
The strategy was simple, clear, tried and tested. It had been used successfully not only against Libya, but also Kosovo (in 1999), and was rapidly underway in Syria. It was to run as follows: train proxies to launch armed provocations; label the state's response to these provocations as genocide; intimidate the UN Security Council into agreeing that "something must be done"; incinerate the army and any other resistance with fragmentation bombs and Hellfire missiles; and finally install a weak, compliant government to sign off new contracts and alliances drawn up in London, Paris and Washington, whilst the country tore itself apart.

Result: the heart torn out of the "axis of resistance" between Iran, Syria and Hizbullah, leaving Iran isolated and the West with a free hand to attack Iran without fear of regional repercussions.

British forces in Syria, Assad presidential compound said under attack
DEBKAfile   June 26, 2012,

Unconfirmed first reports from British, French and Turkish sources say British special operations forces crossed from Turkey into northern Syria Tuesday, May 26, and advanced up to 10 kilometers inside the country. The same sources report heavy fighting around the Presidential Guards compound on the outskirts of Damascus.
debkafile’s military sources note that this compound exists to defend Bashar Assad’s presidential palace on Mount Qaisoun overlooking Damascus.

Syria 'Friends' Fuel Murder with Promises of Weapons for Rebels

by grtv

Syria's President says countries like the US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey are hindering peace in his country by supporting those he calls 'terrorists'.

Bashar al-Assad accused Washington of being partially responsible for the deaths of innocent civilians by partnering with the rebels. The Syrian army have started large-scale drills simulating defense against outside attacks.

Some opposition leaders previously appealed to the West for foreign intervention against the regime.

But as Maria Finoshina reports from Syria, many in the country are fearing for their lives if the rebel forces get what they want.

U.S. Military Announces Syria War Plans Are Ready

Posted by Alexander Higgins - June 14, 2012

The U.S. military has completed plans to conduct operations against Syria which all involve large numbers of U.S. troops and extended operation.

Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, tells CNN that the U.S. military has completed planning to conduct a variety of military operations against Syria in the event orders are issued.

The plans outline a variety of operations which Pentagon officials tell CNN all involve a large number of U.S. troops and involve a long-term deployment into the region.

The Pentagon’s war plans seem to focus on three areas of importance – direct military actions Syria, securing alleged weapons of mass destruction depots, and providing military support to neighboring nations to keep the war contained within Syria.

Officials warn the civil war inside Syria will lead to a situation on the ground with a level of violence committed by insurgent forces far greater than what the US faced in Iraq.

None of insurgents were Syrian: UK journalist

Monday August 6, 2012 - 08:43

Not a Syrian in sight. This wasn’t what I had expected…Two of them were so Anglicised they couldn’t speak Arabic.”
John Cantile, British journalist freed from capture in Syria
A British photographer who was captured by insurgents in Syria has said that his captors were foreign extremists including several Britons with “not a Syrian in sight”.
On July 19, freelance photographer John Cantile, alongside his Dutch colleague Jeroen Oerlemans, was kidnapped in northern Syrian and freed one week later.

Cantile said he was held in a camp by 30 foreign extremists including some from Britain and Pakistan. He also revealed that some of his captors were “young men with south London accents”.

“Not a Syrian in sight. This wasn't what I had expected”, Cantile added. “Two of them were so Anglicised they couldn't speak Arabic”.
