They're the ones telling the story. People are always the heroes of their stories, especially in religious matters, except in the case of the aztecs though who had the terrible misfortune of worshipping gods that looked just like the blood thirsty unscrupulous conquistadors who then used that weakness to destroy them. If anything this mishap should warn you, superstitious people that your superstitions may someday backfire on you, probably when you'll least expect it.
