No, I wouldn't.

Yes, you would. I've seen you whine about clothes, including those with the American flag sewn into them being banned for years. You've become nothing but a shill for the left, which is a shame.

A prom dress patterned after a hoody would be a fashion nightmare, as would be one fashioned after a monk's robe and cowl. While not provocative in and of itself, a hoody prom dress would by its abysmal shabbiness make mock of every other dress in the room, and every girl in one.

That's the crux of the problem. Her perception is not going to be the same as the perception of others. She probably doesn't feel the need to spend her prom evening explaining to all comers that her dress is intended to honor her ancestors; but others will demand to know why she's wearing it because they'll view it as honoring a past that embraced slavery and incalculable human suffering institutionalized and perpetuated for the sake of enriching slave-owning "gentlemen farmers."

All that is historically accurate. Then again, if she's honoring her family history, and doesn't mind explaining it to people, that's her choice. In fact, having a frank conversation on the subject is probably good for all sides, although how frank a conversation would arise at a high school prom is questionable.  Undecided

What a hassle - and so predictable too. How much easier just to wear taffeta, crinoline, or velvet?

As I said to another poster, the fashionability of her choice is another topic.

It may not mark a racist, true, but it does imply, rather strongly, a sympathy for the ideals held dear by the rebel South, among which were necessarily those I mentioned above. Even if the surface intent is not to provoke, the reality is that the flag of the Confederacy does in fact provoke on sight, just as displaying the Hakenkreuz provokes.

The ideals held by those who use the Confederate flag are pretty varied. There are diehard racists who use it. There are also people who use it to honor ancestors who fought and/or died in the Civil War. It may even be used by people who see the issue of Secession as a constitutional issue, and therefore believe the Southern States were in their right to secede.

Giving reasons why a hoody prom dress would be just as inappropriate as one made from a Confederate flag, just for different reasons.

You didn't give any reasons for that. You went on some kind of fashion critique. I've also seen nothing to prove that the dress was modeled on the confederate flag. Have you?

There are more appropriate venues for that conversaion, wouldn't you agree? So why provoke it at the prom? To what purpose?

Indeed. But poor fashion rarely if ever provokes unless there's an obvious element of provocation in it such as Confederate colors and patterns, or a dress or tux tastefully covered with little swastikas.

Again, don't you think all that makes for too tensely loaded an evening at the prom? Crinoline never goes out of style; the open appearance of racist attitudes has been out of style in decent company since the 80s.

Providing the reason - the critique itself - for the inappropriateness of a hoody prom dress.

Obviously you didn't look at the picture of the dress. Allow me to assist:

I guess you could compare it with the confederate flag, but so what? Again, you wouldn't throw her out of the prom for wearing a hoody dress, which has some very serious negative connotations these days, right? Hell, you'd probably defend her right to burn an American flag at the prom, wouldn't you?

The somewhat vertical stripes are much more thinning than horizontal ones would have been, BTW. Grin

I'd throw her out of the prom for wearing deliberately provocative apparel. I'd throw out the hoody wearer for dress inappropriate to the specific venue and occasion. Proms are for dancing and shmoozing, not for political statements - and a hoody-dress makes a political statement every bit as much as the Confederate flag dress.
