Romney's VP choice
May 19th, 2012 at 8:52am

We know Obama's choice will almost certainly be Biden again. When it comes to Romney, what, from a political standpoint, should he focus on?

Pick as many as you like.

Please consider the political viewpoint. We all agree that the best moral decision would be the person that Romney thinks could best ascend to the office should something happen to him, but let's be realistic. That isn't going to be the motivating factor and probably never has been for any candidate.

Naturally, the VP selection is not as important as we make it out to be, but it is still interesting to discuss.

Pick the quality/qualities that should be the most important from a political standpoint and then feel free to discuss in more detail in your posts.

I chose former opponent from primary.

Since this was an opinion on who he should pick, not who he will pick, I think he should pick Ron Paul.  I know there are plenty of people who will be completely against that.  But they are people who would vote Romney anyway.  Ron Paul will help get the young vote and a whole lot of the independent vote.

The biggest issue many have with Paul is his take on the Military/national security.  With Romney being really big on defense/larger military, I think they balance nicely, and at the end of the day Paul's views on the subject would have little impact.  On the other hand, his input on economics and healthcare would be very valuable.

I would like for it to be someone unexpected.
I watched Ren for example trash Marco Rubio under the
lable of "vetting"   Roll Eyes. It would be funny to watch the
left blow their mouths off, expending their energy, only
for Romney to pick someone completely unexpected.

Geographic balance doesn't influence voter behaviour, i.e., if you pick a VP nominee from a particular state, voters are not more likely to vote for the Presidential candidate.

My own opinion is that Romney needs a VP who has some cache with the base, e.g., a Rubio, a Rand Paul, etc.

What does Ron Paul gain Romney?

Independents.  Especially those that are against expansion of military spending, and in favor of less government involvement in many social issues.  He will gain Libertarians that may have not voted or written him in.  He has a large following of young supporters, which is a major base of votes for Obama that can be pulled away.
