Excellent article and point well made, Soral.
But then, you didn't need me to tell you that.
The resultant reactionary blather was proof enough.

well if you add on the "right" to health care then you have to add another 700 or so hours a year to that number
the only point is on sorry's head that he shapes dunce caps on for other liberals like you

The minimum wage needed to provide for all essential needs. At least, that's how I've always taken and used the phrase.

The much trickier question these days in first-world nations is what exactly constitutes "essential needs?"

a place to live (new york city is a great place with RENT CONTROL)
food (plenty of places like sams club and growing a few mater plants of you own along with local food banks)
clothes (try good will)
a car (one WITHOUT a four thousand dollar sterero and spinner hub caps)
no smokes or booze
many people live in their means
why should i cry for someone that has five kids and lives in a government paid apartment on my tax money?

Which is why poor people usually live 10-12 folks in an apartment at a time. What's your point?

Ahh minimum wage, livable wage, minimum necessities blah blah blah.

Minimum wage in Mexico is about $150.00 per month.  Yes MONTH.  Now what happens when a country next door offers minimum wages in some places of 8-10 dollars an HOUR.  Hmm lets see.  I can stay home and make $150.00 a month or I can go see my neighbor and take a job at 7 dollars an hour and make 2x that in a week, live with 8 of my cousins, get free health care and free education for my kids....

A final word of advice.  If your skill set has put you in a job where you are even remotely concerned about the definition of "livable wage", then you need to get more skills and get a better job.  Not hard if you try.  The problem here is that we don't know what try means anymore.  We think try means, "well I applied for that nuclear physicist job but can you believe it, they wanted an actual physicist...."

I find it comical, seriously comical, to hear everyone belly aching about minimum this and livable that.  If you can't get by in life as a door greeter at WalMart then you have two choices:
1. Do something else.
2. Change your lifestyle to be able to get by.

I guess that many would rather make you a ward of state and doom you to a lifetime of non existence and irrelevance to society.  If you allow that choice to be made for you, you deserve what you get.

I don’t know if they are one or two bedroom , but right on Whickham Rd. in Melbourne Florida are apartments, $450.00 dollars a month. They are off the main road, and each has it’s own parking space, one floor, not bad looking.

Why not just make the minimum wage $1000/hour?

We could wipe out poverty immediately!

As long as there are still employers willing to hire people at that price, of course.

You know what really sucks, though?  The graphic in the OP is going to lead some people to conclude that a higher minimum wage is needed.  It simply doesn't matter that it makes no sense; if people are fooled by it, it has succeeded.
