Yet another reason to lock this country down!

Ever wonder why you hear about third world country diseases cropping up in America after they have been eradicated?  Dirty Illegals bringing it in.

Here's another reason to stop the border jumpers coming in....

Chagas Disease, an incurable infection, called the ‘new AIDS of the Americas'
: report
Is this the disease that killed Charles Darwin?

Experts have dubbed it the “new AIDS of the Americas.”

A parasitic infection called Chagas Disease has similarities to the early spread of HIV, according to research published recently in the journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Like AIDS, Chagas is hard to detect and has a long incubation period before symptoms emerge, the study said, according to the New York Times.

As many as 8 million people are infected in the Western Hemisphere, mainly in Bolivia, Mexico, Colombia and Central America, as well as some 30,000 people in the U.S., the newspaper reported. Chagas infects people in areas of poverty, and most U.S. cases are found in immigrants. (PC meaning:  illegal alien)

Because Chagas is often left untreated, it spreads easily, either genetically or through blood transfusion. If caught early, it can be treated with intense medication, but the drugs are scarce in poor countries and very little money is invested in searching for new treatments, the paper said.

Chagas is usually transmitted from the bite of blood-sucking insects that release a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi into the victim’s bloodstream. The parasite can eventually make its way to the heart, where it can live and multiply.

Infections often stay dormant for years, and then emerge as heart arrhythmias and heart failure. About a quarter of victims develop enlarged heart or intestines that can lead to sudden death if they burst, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New research suggests Chagas may have led to the death of Charles Darwin — one of the great medical mysteries.

Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine believe Darwin suffered from three different illnesses, including a Chagas infection contracted on a voyage to the Andes in South America, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month.

Darwin wrote in his diary that he was bitten by a “great wingless black bug” during the trip in 1835. He died 47 years later of heart failure.

Considering that Chagas has been identified in the USA for over half a century as originating from local vectors (source) and we don't appear to screen legal immigrants for the disease (source), I don't see how "locking down the country" is related to this issue beyond the fact that some people will try to tie any issue to their nationalistic border fetishes.

Let's see, half a century, hmmm, that is 50 years. And how long has it been since we don't hold immigrants at the statue of Liberty any more,( or the equivalent )? How do they get here now? And how many are illegal? We have been acting very stupidly now for a long time. The time has come for us to pay for being so dumb, perfect example. How many voted for Obama? That can be cured. Now we will see the really stupid. Voting for Obama is about as smart as putting your head in an alligators mouth.

Okay... That doesn't really have much to do with the topic of the thread though.

If the more commonly cited motives for "locking down" the nation's borders have not affected change in national policy then it hardly seems that immigrant-correlated emergence of an obscure tropical disease that is already native to this country will make for an effective justification.

Most cases are immigrant (ie:  illegal).  Also, I said that it was yet another reason to lock down this country.  Meaning.... there are many other reasons, not just the one.  TB, bed bugs, and many other already eradicated third world diseases have made a comeback.

Spin all you want Panda, but the truth is the truth.

I'm really not trying to spin this. I have a different opinion and I'm trying to discuss it. Since I don't have a clear agenda on the matter "spin" seems superfluous. While I do generally advocate for freely open national borders I do acknowledge that there are many negative implications of such a policy that would need to be mitigated if such a policy were to be sustainable.

I was going to say something about TB, but you got me wondering:

How much of the prevalence of TB in our correctional institutions is the result of incarcerated illegal immigrants?

The Daily News article cited in the OP says Chagas is "a parasitic infection" that can be spread "genetically."

I have serious doubts that a parasitic infection can be "spread genetically," whatever that means.

Argh.

I assumed the article was just grossly misinterpreting the ability of a pregnant woman to pass the disease to her fetus, but you're right when you say that a disease caused by introduction of protozoa is not genetically inheritable.

At least, I've never heard of a parasitic protozoa that rewrites the DNA of their host.

Native to this country, in the last 50 years. Do you understand what you are saying. We have boa constrictors here in Florida, are they native too.

Seems like an assumption that immigrant is pc for illegal alien.  Nothing seems to suggest that legal immigrants are tested for this disease before they enter this country.  So if illegal and legal entrants to this country could be carriers I don't see anything PC about labeling them simply as immigrants.
