It's funny, as I started to answer this question, it became more complex than I originally thought.

The thing is, I can see how a candidate can win an election without really doing much to his credit, but it is difficult to see how a candidate can lose an election without being the main one responsible for the loss.

What I mean is, you can ride a tide of good fortune into office. In that case, you can be credited for getting out of the way, I suppose, but that's really it.

But when it comes to bad fortune, the candidate is responsible for overcoming it. If he can't do that, then he wasn't a good enough candidate.

I'm not sure that I'm being logically consistent here. I need to think this through some more.
