By the 1940's when I was saying the Pledge of Allegiance in grade school, we put our hands over our hearts.  Hitler doused enthusiasm for the "Heil".

Kids need to memorize more than rap stuff.  It doesn't harm them to memorize the Pledge of Allegiance,.  It also wouldn't hurt them to memorize parts of MLK's "I have a Dream" speech.  Memorization is good for the brain.   I'm sure that if people don't want their kids to memorize any of that, they can opt out.  Of course, there's no better way to get a kid to memorize something than for a parent to say, "You can't".  Go for it, you naysayers!

I do wonder what the naysayers don't like about the Pledge and memorizing it.

I remember being threatened with expulsion for not participating in the Pledge at a public school. It taught me an important lesson that remains with me today, although I am fairly certain it was not the lesson our ex-marine principal intended to teach me.

Oh, well that totally explains how getting kids to memorize the speech fixes a bunch of problems. Silly me for not seeing it the first time.

Yes silly and shameful you.

You wouldn't know if you were losing your liberties or not if it slapped you in the face! Wink

Because nothing says 'patriotism'  and 'freedom' like a mandatory loyalty oath.

Because it's a loyalty oath, beaten into school children, in an environment where they neither understand the implications nor can feel safe to opt out.

That's creepy.

Plus, it was written by a socialist in an era of fascism and militant progressive socialism.

Free people need not pledge allegiance to any nationalistic icons.

And, these days, where the republic is not really a republic, and there really isn't "liberty and justice for all", what sense does it make to pretend these things are true while swearing allegiance?

Finally, I do not believe this nation should be considered "indivisible", given the grotesque power of the federal government and the enormous variety of people they try to represent in a geographic area with ~330 million people.

Thor also thinks you should brush your teeth at least once per day. Do you agree with him on that? And does that "tell me who you are!"?

Excellent argument, Patriot!

Doesn't matter. It's an argument to the order of magnitude of people, along with the variety of people, that one terrible government is trying to control.

It happens every now and then. We probably agree more than you might think.

When the symbols (flag) mean more than the reality (Constitution), Fascism has arrived.

MOOT

My guess is that you're one of the millions of people who do not understand what the word "moot" means.

Unless you think my response to you was "subject to debate, dispute, or uncertainty"?

Too many people think that "moot" means "irrelevant or unimportant".

It was sarcastic. Your argument that I am an "idiot" is nothing more than ad hominem dogs**t, without any intellectual backing.

Get your numbers straight.

But you do see that it doesn't matter to the argument I'm making, right?

Whether we count the illegals or not has no bearing on whether or not this country would be better off splitting into multiple smaller governmental entities, right?

You do see this, don't you?

So why are you stuck on whether my 330 million number includes illegals or not?
