You can do your own research if you're interested.  Here's a cut and paste from an authoritative web-site.

Marriage

Marriage isn't what it used to be.

As America has evolved over the centuries, so too has the institution of marriage.

In colonial times, marriage was largely a matter of property and reproduction.

When a colonial woman married, she gave up any legal right as an individual. She was legally bound to obey her husband, just as she would obey God.

Despite this, colonial marriages rarely happened in churches.

If one reads enough history going far enough back, I think one will have to agree that there is more secularity going on in the institution of marriage than religiosity.

I don't think a reading of history will support that statement.

How long is history? How old is the concept of "separation of church and state"?

This is just like when Christians terrorists dressed up like Indians and looted tea warehouses in some kind of misguided political protest against "The Man."

I don't buy it.

Kind of like the faux outrage over Washington Redskins?  Hmm... you've got a point.

Indeed, Christian Indians get outraged over the weirdest stuff.

History goes all the way back to what we refer to as "pre historic."  And I think you'll find that the concept of marriage and family has existed all the way back to then and before then.  I think you will also find that marriages were, in most cases, legally recognized arrangements even if the legal "system" in place was simply based on tribal customs.  It mattered not where they occurred, and even during the time of the Great Awakening, marriages between common folk generally took place when the two parties, the female half of which was not uncommonly already with child, signed documents in front of a duly authorized official.

The idea that church should be separated from state came about when thinking people finally realized that when they were combined, both suffered greatly.
