I couldn't say and I am not sure there is data on that.

It would have to be at the very top of the list if profits are their concern.

That might be how it should be and perhaps was at one time however post-industrial revolution history demonstrates that corporations 'making people better off' takes a back seat to profits. .. In fact making people worse off has been advantageous to some.

Yes but post-industrial society is rife with corruption, cronyism, and a fascist alliance between corporation and state.

So we shouldn't expect these firms to approximate the free market ideal.

Who said anything about religion?

Did I say something that goes against your faith?

Of course not.. You brought faith into it..

No true Christian Free Market Capitalist would operate a business that didn't go about 'making people better off'..

It's not that they wouldn't do so. It's that others would react in such a way as to expel the inferiors.

This tendency is even present in our highly regulated and captured markets. So you know it would work in a more free and competitive environment.

To deny this is to deny that people are self interested.

Sigh. Roll Eyes

From Adam Smith, an exponent of the Scottish Enlightenment that inspired the American Founders:

It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.

It is this idea that left wingers will never grasp, even if you tried to pound it into their heads with a sledge hammer.

This isn't the be all end all of Adam Smith on morality and economics either.

I've been meaning to read this but I can't find a good hardcover edition on Ebay or Amazon.

Might have to break down and read the pdf..

I've only ever seen a paperback version in stores (and that was once). Library of Economics and Liberty has a lot of good stuff though. Very good resource.
