Eliminate individual welfare and there will be cities burning.

You will have to provide some support for this.

People need to eat, our system does not offer enough jobs for all to eat without gov't assistance.

Without assistance, sure.  There will always be those in need of assistance.  That doesn't mean it need be provided by government.  Especially to the degree that it currently is.

Quote:
Most economists say at least 1% unemployment is needed for our system to work smoothly...in a country like ours, 1% is a lot of people, and of course real unemployment is far higher than a measly 1%.

Unemployment =/= unable to eat.  Mitt Romney was unemployed while campaigning.

And unemployment would be far more manageable absent the plunder mentioned previously.

Quote:
It was also mechanization and the scale it brought with it, and the external costs that it brought with it, that killed the small farmer.

Mechanization can also be helpful to small farmers.  When you have limited resources, a single farmer can produce much more with a tractor than without.

Well, where are the countries with economies of scale but small governments?

Hong Kong has pretty limited government involvement in the economy.  As does Singapore.  Both are pretty large economies while also being major urban centers.  A pretty impressive feat, I would say.

The lack of a perfect example, though, would not be proof that one necessitates the other.

You make everything sound very one-sided.

But lets be clear, before our modern economies of scale your local butcher was not looking to 'grow his business' and become wealthy through franchising.

He was looking simply to make a living and provide a needed service to his community.

This is a very different mentality from the capitalist mentality which looks, from the get-go, to grow as big as possible and make as much money as possible.

Not a chance.  Complexity of society increases, including commercial dealings, as time goes on, but human nature stays the same.  NO businessman says, for example, "Garsh, they don't have a gas station in Podunk - I'll open one there so I can serve the community!"   Grin  Likewise larger scale enterprises.
