Hard to believe that it was almost torn down in the 19th century after falling into disrepair and being attacked during the French Revolution.

Tells you how strong the anti-religious tendencies of that revolution were.

I should say, what is Gothic architectures deeper characteristics?

Primarily, it is a heroic architecture, which corresponds to the adventurous/heroic mindset of the Northwest European people.

It is not mere chance that the same culture that produced Beowulf and the myth of the Heroic Warrior who goes off to slay the terrible beast produced the Gothic cathedrals.  The same culture that in our own time produced the High Elves, who went to war with Satan and laid him siege.  Galadriel and Elrond would be at home in a Gothic cathedral.

The Gothic cathedrals show a synthesis of the priestly and warrior/ruler castes in Northwest European society.  Obviously a church is sacred architecture and in that sense is of the priestly caste*...but these cathedrals covered in statues of robed Lords and Ladies as well as demons are also thus a crystallization of the chilvarous warrior mentality of the society in which they were built.

Frithjof Schuon described Gothic cathedrals as 'petrified forests with canopies of stained glass.'

The Gothic cathedral shows how beautifully medieval Christian culture was flowering...and then the beast that was the Renaissance rose up and slew it.

*To put it very shortly...obviously the mysteries of such profound sacred architecture as a Gothic cathedral are many and I do not claim more than to scratch the surface.

If thinking of these Cathedrals does not bring out some sense of awe in you, than you truly are a base little man.

Of course you will say it was just something in my talk of them, I am sure.

It's a political forum, Frank. This isn't architectural digest.
