I admire the way this guy (Jeff Durbin) spoke to these young Mormon missionaries.  Things tend to heat up quick or get uncomfortable when witnessing, he did a good job of graciously keeping the conversation going.

Not seeing your link.  Mormons maintain that good works is nessecary for salvation, correct?

"Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure (and) which insures to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments."

But Joseph came after Scripture.

If the book of Mormon is revealed word, surely any contradiction with earlier writing takes precedence?

This is like the old conversation about the wrathful, vengeful, frankly terrifying God of the OT compared to the NT.

Or is it possible that the book of Mormon is straight forward fiction and safe to ignore entirely?

Personally, I think it's a certainty it's safe to ignore as far as it being the divinely inspired work of God.

Having read it, I think I cautiously agree but let's not forget the whole "mysterious ways" thing.
