I take your point, Western Europe and North America have been the peaceful ones.

I disagree about war and peace being cyclical, any more than sobriety and drunkenness being cyclical for an alcoholic.

It's possible to break out.

We are not doomed.

Okay atheists who are atheists because SCIENCE! (I'm not...I'm an atheist because anthropology, sociology, history and human nature)

If evolution works in the manner I understand it to work, why are we humans the only species on earth with such a highly developed capacity for reason and tool usage?

Why aren't we fighting for space with lizard people?  And bug people?  And fish people?

It's merely a question of timing. it takes millions of years to develop sapience, but only thousands of years to evolve technology. So, even if say dozens of species were likely to ever get to the technological stage, the chances for two of them to get there at the same time, IE within the same ten thousand of year period, are very small. Now that also means that by the time another species gets there we will either have evolved to a quasi-divine knowledge of nature and science or we will be extinct. The latter appearing much more plausible than the former. In fact what's more likely is that before we disappear we will have ruined this planet to badly that hundreds of millions of years of recovery will be needed before any other species gets the chance to repeat our experience.

This is where a bit of the 'luck of the draw' concept might shed some light.

First of all, being members of the great ape family was a huge bonus.  We were given all the tools to grow big brains. Opposable thumbs, an intricte voice box, bi pedal movement.  All of these advantaes pushed man to the top of the food chain, made us kick ass hunters and gatherers.

This gave us the excess calories, sugar and fat to develop a big brains.  The brain being the least understood organ of the human body requires a lot of fat and sugar to keep chugging.

It was primarily humans omnivorous ability, coupled with an increase of meat thanks to are awesome hunting skills, that eventually lead to a sapient brain.

And emoticons.

Yeah, opposable thumbs, binocular vision, an urbane manner and low-cut, floor length sheer satin gowns.

Cool.

But we also get aggression and unsightly patches of armpit sweat.

Where's atheism then, eh?

Lizard people would be a much bigger step. We evolved from an ape. For all we know Lizards may be more evolved then their ancestors. We're not as strong as apes, and Lizards may also be weaker but smarter. They maybe much smarter then the dinosaur or the giant crocodile. I believe they split into many different species.

Christianity was born...

I look at that and think, why was it born?

What was wrong with what was already there?

Why did certain groups go around the world changing the thought processes of so many people? Think missionaries.

Who says that a christian god is the only god? Why can't there be multiple gods as the native Americans used to worship?

Why can't there be many gods for different religious cults to praise?

I am not an atheist but more a nonbeliever. Why, because if there a god who supposedly loves all of us, why does he/she/it allow us to do to each other what we do?

A bigger question is why did a god make us? To what purpose is this experiment?

Are we really the only petri dish in all of the universes that are out there?

One other thing about evolution and technology...why did it take humans so long to evolve into what we accomplished in the last 250+ years?

Not so much born as revamped.  Christianity is the most successful in a long line of similar revealed religions each with a creation myth and a reborn messiah ..

It's a means of control..

As there is no evidence for a god ..why imagine that there are ANY gods..

What is the difference?

A short answer might be  .. Anywhere in the universe if one combines hydrogen and oxygen water is formed.  i.e. The same rules apply to matter and energy without regard to where you are.

Life is the same.  Where conditions are favorable.. Life happens.

Who or what creates the conditions and the hydrogen and oxygen?

“There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who do not. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living.”---- José N. Harris
