My parents must have had this on VHS in the 80's because I recall having seen it multiple times.  I knew nothing of the books, and neither did they, but I always enjoyed this cartoon.  Naturally, it really condenses things, but it is a cartoon for children.  For what it is, I really think it is well done.

As a child I always felt a sense of mystery, mixed with comfort when watching it.  You can't Gandalf's entrance!  What child with any imagination wouldn't like it!   Grin

That was mine as well Frank.  I watched it on television with my parents when I was 7.

I remember the spiders scaring the crap out of me.

A few years later I was in a Pamida and this tall dude in a black costume (one of the 9) was handing out flyers for a cartoon version of Lord of the Rings.  I got my mom to take me to it.

I haven't been able to find that version.  I've watched the few available but none of them remind me of that one I saw in movie theatres.  What I specifically remember about the movie version I saw was during the huge end battle, cartoon blood splashing all over the screen.  My mom was horrified (that's why I remember it so well.)  I was ten or so, so musta been about 1980.

You know anything about that one?  The ones I've found available to rent don't have the ending and do not seem like that one I saw in the movies.

As far as I know the only animated versions of Tolkien are the 1977 Rankin/Bass Hobbit, posted above, and Ralph Bakshi's LOTR from the late 70's and early 80's.

Here is a battle from the Bakshi LOTR, which frankly doesn't appeal to me.
