He went downhill fast. He was still wrestling less than two years ago.

His Cage match with Bob Backlund in '82 is still my favorite match.

He was an innovator in his day. His dives off the top of the cage were unheard of then.

He died under a cloud of suspicion, however. He was most likely involved in the death of his girlfriend many years ago. It's said that Vince McMahon himself helped cover up the deed. He was going to be put on trial just recently, but he was declared unfit to stand trial. Some people thought he was feigning illness to avoid being convicted. I guess he proved them wrong.

Cry

He was the Undertakers 1st WM win. Torwards the end he was one of the guys that lost most of the time against superstars (Like "the birdman" did)

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, when I was dead broke I couldn't picture this.

When he turned face in '83 he was the biggest star in the WWF. Bigger than Backlund who was champion. If he didn't have so much baggage he may have been given the belt.

Exactly. I read Backlund's autobiography, and Backlund said that Snuka was a strong candidate to take the world belt from him, but in the end Vince Sr. did not pull the trigger because Snuka was so unreliable. He was battling his "demons" even then.

And he was in his 40's. I would have liked to see Snuka take the belt but he wouldn't have had the pop culture effect Hogan had and Hogan brought a lot of people with him from the AWA. Okerlund, Ventura, Shultz, Stevens. Vince wanted to mainstream wrestling and Hogan was perfect for that.

I have watched YouTube videos of Georgia Championship Wrestling in the early 1980s, and Jimmy Snuka was actually a heel wrestler. He was a tag team champion with "Freebird" Terry Gordy. What an odd pairing.

That is an odd pairing. He also won the NWA tag belts with Paul Orndorf.

I recall when wrestling was on at 11 PM on WOR Channel 9.  McMahon was just the announcer back then. Never missed it. Remember Chief Jay Strongbow?  His real name was Luke Joseph Scarpa.

“There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who do not. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living.”---- José N. Harris
