Top car chase movies

This one's for Billy!  Smiley

12.   Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) - Stuntman H. B. Haliki puts a yellow 1973 Mustang almost literally through the ringer running from cops in this low budget but totally enjoyable film.  Strictly 1970's drive-in fare.

11.   Smokey and the Bandit (1977) - Eastbound and down with Burt Reynolds running from Jackie Gleason in a black 1977 Trans Am.  This movie almost beat out Star Wars the year it was released.

10.  Thunder Road (1958)- Robert Mitchum came up with this one, the granddaddy of all chase movies.  I came with a catchy title song too!

9.     The Gumball Rally (1976) - No one remembers this one, but if you find it on, take a look..   The producer used real (not replica) cars to run across the country.  The final scenes has a Shelby Cobra going flat out against a Ferrari Daytona through drainage sewers then the streets of Long Beach.

8.     Freebie and the Bean (1974) - Another little seen gem starring Alan Arkin and James Caan.  It came with more than enough mayhem and automotive wreckage to fill a junkyard.

7.     Mad Max (1979) - Mel Gibson's US debut was billed as "High Octane Excitement!".  It damn sure was.  Oddly enough, in the US version of the film, all of the Australian actors (including Gibson's) had their voices dubbed to sound... American.

6.     The Blues Brothers (1980) - Dan Acroyd.  John Belushi.  It's night.  They're driving a 1974 Dodge Polara with a cop plant and cop tires.  They're wearing sun glasses.... Hit it!

5.     Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry (1974)
- Peter Fonda wheels a 1969 (or 1968 depending what scene is up) Dodge Charger big block over some country roads after a hold up.  The movie only slows down for dialog but the action speaks for itself.

4.     Vanishing Point (1971) - Barry Newman is Kowalski.  He makes a bet that he can deliver a white Dodge Challenger from LA to Denver in under 24 hours.  Little dialog but LOTS of action.

3.     The French Connection (1971) - Gene Hackman chasing a bad guy on an El train in New York with a "borrowed" Pontiac Tempest.  If you haven't seen this one, you haven't lived....

2.     The Italian Job (1969) - Michael Caine leads a group of thieves with a plan to steal Chinese gold bullion.  The only way to get out of town with the gold is with a trio of hopped up Austin Mini's.  How they do it is fabulous.  No special effects here.  Just damn good stunt driving.

1.      Bullitt (1968) - Steve McQueen is still the king in a 1968 Mustang GT facing off with a 1968 Dodge Charger RT.  The one and only...

#12 was the best, and had the best cars.

That classic Mustang turned me on.

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, when I was dead broke I couldn't picture this.

Honorable mention":

The Seven Ups (1973)  A sequel to The French Connection.  If you've seen Bullitt, you've seen the wheelman in the Pontiac Catalina.

Death Proof (2007 ) Quenton Tarantino's homage to Vanishing Point and Bullitt.

How could I have forgotten those?
