Ransom Ware

Was looking at videos and caught a Ransom Ware Virus when I called up a video purporting to show people at Walmart. Locked up my computer and repeatedly displayed a phone no. that claimed to be to Microsoft. Phone no. didn't check out on google. Took no further action and called my youngest son. He walked me through turning off the computer and restart using f8 to call up a repair/replace function of Microsoft OS 10. Computer back running as normal at no expense to me.

Could you detail that procedure? Last time that happened to me, I had to restore an earlier version of the system to make that stupid message go away and then had to reload the upgrades from there. It took forever.

The feature took back to a restore date of 1-31-17, 4 days in the past. I could have choose dates further back but the event just happened yesterday 2-4-17 so I felt I didn't need to go back further. When it finished the restore function it told me my files were unaffected. So far as I can tell the only thing I might of lost are any updates falling in the 4 day void.

I see. So maybe I need to increase the amount of memory allotted to the restore function because my most recent restore date was much further back.

Restore points can be a life saver.

I recommend turning the feature on and allocating plenty of space for multiple instances. The downside is that many malware/scareware/ransomware/etc... can, and do, embed themselves in the restore points. At that point, if you can't get the malicious software to stay turned off using Malwarebytes, Rogue Killer, or your fave AV program, then the only option is to pull the drive, copy what files you want to keep using a SATA to USB converter, then reimage.

I'll usually run Malwarebytes a couple times and if the OS is stable, lookup more detailed uninstall instructions for the culprit malware.
