obamacare - the ultimate troll

Interesting piece in NYT today - here's a snip:

Quote:
“It was the ultimate troll,” as Michael Anne Kyle of Harvard Business School put it, “for Obama to pass Republican health reform.”

Today’s Republican Party has moved so far to the right that it no longer supports any plan that covers the uninsured. Of course, Republican leaders are not willing to say as much, because they know how unpopular that position is. Having run out of political ground, Ryan, McConnell and Trump have had to invent the notion of a socialistic Obamacare that they will repeal and replace with … something great!

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/14/opinion/the-original-lie-about-obamacare.html...

Basically, Obama abandoned both the Clinton model of a centrist healthcare reform "grand bargain" AND his own preference for a left-friendly "single payer for all" approach, and went with a republican solution.  It was based on ideas hatched by republicans, co-sponsored by 20 republican senators in the 90s, and implemented by Romney in MA as his signature accomplishment.

Congressional republicans decided not to embrace their own brainchild and perhaps extend their philosophical footprint within.  Instead, they opposed their own plan in Obamacare-clothes so rigidly and uniformly, that they pushed themselves much farther to the right than their own leadership ever envisioned 20 years ago.

This trumpcare bill, more than the Trump budget, will deeply undermine the republican majority in the house in 2018.

Funny ain't it.  GOP hated the black president so much, that they refused to even compromise with him.  They were the obstructionist party.  Now that Obstructionism has bitten them in the ass.  They just need to admit they they never had a replacement bill and they know damn well that the bill they put together in a rush will anger their constituients so much, that they risk the 2018 elect.

Exactly! And I recall watching a news conference at the time where Obama literally said (paraphrasing): I don't understand why all you Republicans are objecting...this is YOUR PLAN!. He couldn't see the forest for the trees - whitey didn't want blackie to have his name on their law.

And going further, I think this is one of the main reasons Dems abandoned him in 2010. He basically fought for the ideas of the people who were doing everything they could to stop him. That and the fact that he didn't pursue W.

And here's the real dilly - Dems are now fighting tooth and nail to defend a Republican law! Explain that one.

Are not democrats, now, opposing their own plan?  I think you were the one that claimed that the republican bill is basically the same thing with tax cuts for the rich, right?

That was the argument you made out of one side of your mouth, and now you are making this new one out of the other side.

Which is it?  Is the new bill basically the same thing with some tax cuts, or is it so far to the right that their party 20 years ago couldn't have envisioned it?

If it is vastly similar to Obamacare, why are the democrats so harshly opposed to it in the same way you portray republicans vis-a-vis Obamacare?  Are they making the exact same mistake?

If it isn't similar to Obamacare, where are the democrats with ideas to compromise?

1st, it's not the same
2nd, more and more and more tax cuts to the rich hurt the economy and run up the debt - as they have every time starting with runnie.

Because it isn't as bad as having no regulations on healthcare at all and it is not as good as the bill written by Hillary and Bill Clinton.  That is called compromise, not partisanship.
