Is it simply past violent Fundamentalist that have given American fundamentalism a bad rap?

Fundamentalism :strict adherence to the basic principles of any subject or discipline.

Why is it wrong or mocked to be an American?

Fundamentalism is not the problem providing that the thing we are fundamental about is good and deserving.

The problem is hypocrisy.

It's hard to take people seriously who say all men are created equally, and that man was endowed with unalienable rights, when they go around starting wars, overthrowing governments, jailing peaceful people and at one point, tolerating chattel slavery.

"Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influences, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist." J M Keynes

"In the first place, the dichotomy between "theoretical" and "practical" is a false one. In economics, all arguments are theoretical. And, since economics discusses the real world, these theoretical arguments are by their nature "practical" ones as well." M Rothbard
