Until something catastophic happens and they get emergency medical care on the tax payers dollar.  Reagan signed EMTALA which makes it illegal for health care providers to deny emergent treatment based on ability to pay.

So the hospital has to turn around and tap the state which usually has some kind of emergency fund to compensate hospitals lest they go out of business under the weight of unpaid ER bills.  Either way, we're going to end up paying for these people that choose not to carry insurance.

one way they do it is by overcharging those without insurance.

It works out if they pay or not.
If they pay - they pay for at least 5 who didn't
If they don't pay - the hospital gets to write off a greater loss to offset taxable profits from those who pay through insurance

It would be the same if they had Medicaid (which is where they would end up in that case).

That doesn't mean the taxpayer is responsible.  The healthcare provider is.

I don't know of any hospitals that are going out of business due to unpaid ER bills.  I mean, one denied Medicare claim for a moderately long stay is worse than a large number of ER visits that go unpaid.

No, the healthcare providers will.  Or Medicaid will.  Which is what so many of them would have anyway if forced to be insured.

We always hear about this meme about all these uninsured patients overwhelming hospitals and doctors and driving them out of business.  But those that pitch this idea never support it or bring the numbers.  Going uninsured doesn't guarantee you will end up with a catastrophic medical event.  In fact, it is just as rare for the uninsured as it is for the insured.  That is to say, it is very rare.  If it weren't, insurance would be wildly more expensive than it is.

So let's not continue this narrative without something backing it up.

What makes this especially odd, is these folks that claim concern over taxpayers footing the bill for someone's healthcare, are usually the ones that support direct taxpayer funding of all sorts of healthcare costs (and in some cases, quite literally, all of the costs).

I mean, if anyone brings the numbers on these uninsured folks that end up costing the taxpayers for their healthcare, would the dollars reach the level of cost of the ACA?  That is, if there was simply a taxpayer fund to cover these costs (and all other health cost payment programs were eliminated), would it really cost remotely close to the costs of Medicare, Medicaid, the various Obamacare programs, etc.?  I don't think so.

Do you really think writing off a loss means something worked out?

Also, losses from insured patients whose charges aren't paid are written off, too.

Very good Archie, that's correct.  The ACA corrects the problem of the uninsured and puts the burden where it belongs, on an insurance company.

The point is we're going to pay either way.
