So you disagree, but can't explain yourself

Seems like you repugs would object to the monopoly set up by Congress to protect team owners

Or, these same monopolies holding cities hostage while demanding things be given to them - like billion dollar stadiums

Seriously? Have you heard of Title IX? College athletic departments are weighed down by this silly concept, and as a result there are a lot of funded sports programs that operate at a loss. Doesn't sound very "free market" to me.

9 is one of the rules. Comply and you can join.

The pro team owners have a plain and simple monopoly

That's not very free market, is it? If it were, all athletic departments would be able to make a profit. As it is, most athletic departments lose money. It's because of Title IX.

Nope. Anyone is free to start their own football league. There have been attempts made in the past: USFL, XFL, etc. They just couldn't catch on.

Any school can start a football program and join any college league

No one can start an nfl team unless the monolog approves.

Colleges do make a profit on sports. Big profits. My school makes so much off of football that we now have top programs in other sports thanks to title 9 spreading some of the football profits.

Wrong. Sure, any school can start a football program. But you don't get to "join any college league." You have to be approved and meet certain standards. You can't start football and then tell the SEC, "Hey, I'm going to join your conference."

You should educate yourself about sports:

Quote:
The expenses generated by operating athletics programs continued to exceed the revenue they produce at the vast majority of Football Bowl Subdivision schools in 2014, continuing a trend seen in recent years, according to a new NCAA Study.

Only 24 FBS schools generated more revenue than they spent in 2014, according to the NCAA Revenues and Expenses of Division I Intercollegiate Athletics Programs Report. That figure jumped from 20 schools in 2013, but it has remained relatively consistent through the past decade.

Though the number of athletics departments reporting positive net generated revenues has increased slightly, the average of their net generated revenue has dipped in the past year. Those 24 schools, at the median, generated about $6 million in net revenue, compared to just over $8 million in 2013 and a little more than $2 million a decade ago.

But those 24 schools are a minority. Many more schools saw their expenses exceed their revenue, requiring their colleges and universities to cover the shortfall. The median FBS school spent $14.7 million to help subsidize its athletics department in 2014, up from a little more than $11 million in 2013. That level of spending isn’t unique to FBS schools – median Football Championship Subdivision and non-football schools spent roughly $11 million to help fund athletics in 2014.

Always funny the way you conservatives defend monopolies

Pro sports is a monopoly set up by Congress and certain team owners. This status has been maintained by conservatives

College sports are open to any school. There are several different leagues to choose from. Meet the rules and you are in.

btw - the SEC ain't a league.

Unlike pro where you have to prove that you won't hurt anyone's revenues.

As far as you "educating me", more likely you should comprehend that I said "my" school.

Sure title 9 takes away here and there, but most people are in favor of having multiple sports for men and women over just the few profitable ones.
Title 9 sure created some great athletes and great places for athletes to train - for sports other than football and basketball.

...that professional sports are basically corporations? And from what I've heard even college sports (the big sports at least) are starting to get that way too. I find it hard to watch when I know profits figure into things to such a degree.

No, sports teams are for me. I don't care about anyone or anything but my team winning.

Sigh. Like I said, BillyP, you don't know much about sports.

You thought college sports are big moneymakers. I showed you otherwise.

You said college sports are more free enterprise. I showed you otherwise.
