There is another fairly obvious motive if you believe there has been covert collusion between Trump and Putin.  Given the growing pace of news and investigation over the Trump campaign's ties with Putin, it would make perfect sense to find a way to cast doubt on the story.  How?  By putting Trump and Putin seemingly at odds.

Give Trump some reason to act and take what appears to be a tough stance against Putin.  If they look like they're in conflict, it deflates the theory that they are in collusion.

They wouldn't have even had to communicate to get this to work.  Putin sets up Assad with a minor foul, Trump conscientiously notifies Putin to clear the airbase before the bombs hit, bada boom.  Putin's fingerprints are nowhere to be seen, and Trump reacts without actually harming Putin's interests.

Of course, if they DID communicate to set this up, that'd be an even bigger story...

Or simply admit that if Obama's spying on Trump revealed potentially damaging leaks, we would have already heard about it.  This whole russia theory ranks right up with the birther theory.

The Trump: Russian collusion narrative is a classic Red Herring!  As more and more contacts and dealing between the Clinton campaign and the Clinton Foundation and Hillary Clinton herself, with the Russians are exposed, it is becoming apparent that many on both sides were taken in by Russians. It also is becoming apparent that Russia has engaged in this same sort of activity in our previous elections (eg hacking John McCain's email and planting propaganda stories) as the United States has conducted similar activities in foreign elections.

The real Russian story is how much the Obama Administration allowed Russians in their Embassy to expand their influence and contacts within our government!
Then they act so damn surprised when Putin bit the hand that fed them!

The Russian Connection thing isn't entirely vapor.  Trump fired one of his highest-placed cabinet members over it.

If Clinton were President, then I would keep bringing up her name but seeing as she WAS cleared of all accusations, what is wrong with conservatives?

Assad has to do whatever Putin tells him to do.  He is on the edge and without Putin, he's dead and he knows it.

So the real question is why would Putin do this? (have Assad use chemical weapons again)?  One reason seems pretty obvious; he wanted to put Trump to the test on the world stage.  He probably figured, based on Trump's previous statements about Syria, that he could show Trump to be just as weak and ineffective as Obama was when he drew the Red Line about Assad using chemical weapons.

Another less obvious reason could be that in this world of asymmetrical warfare, the use of (outlawed) chemical weapons is a great equalizer.  A relatively small force can win over a much more sophisticated, larger military!
The continued use of banned WMD's by anyone, moves the goalposts!  If chemical weapons become a normal part of today's battlefield, then no one will face war crimes trials or any real consequence for their use!  Putin would love to have the Iranians use Hezbolla to conduct proxy wars!  It give Putin far more leverage in expanding Russia to the former size and influence as the former Soviet Union!
