Most Polluted Cities in US Led by California

By: Karl Nelson
20 Apr 2017

Most of America’s polluted cities are located in California, according to the American Lung Association’s annual “State of the Air” report.

The report, released Wednesday, found that six of the 10 cities with the worst short-term air pollution in the U.S. are in California.

Bakersfield, Visalia, Fresno, Modesto, San Francisco and Los Angeles are on the list, according to USA Today.

California's soaring population and topography allow air pollution to overcome the state's strict environmental laws, said Paul Billings of the American Lung Association. The boom in people brings with it an increase in cars and trucks on the roads, and many of those people live in valley and basins, right where pollution tends to settle.

Nearly year-round sunny skies also don't help: Those picture-perfect days are a major factor in high levels of ozone pollution, he added.

The state would be far worse off without its strict laws on tailpipe pollution and eliminating coal-fired power plants. "They've done more than any other state to counteract air pollution," Billings said.

They ought to eliminate all the energy production---including solar because the solar panels do not last forever and periodically must be replaced. However, the panels contain heavy metals which are known to be detrimental to human health and the environment.

Also, with such a burgeoning population, it is certain that carbon dioxide levels from people's respiration are increasing, and since it has been declared a pollutant, it would be best to put limits on California.'s population.

Then, too, California requires the trucking industry to have their trucks converted to comply with their special anti-pollution laws or be disallowed from traveling there. Perhaps truckers should just leave their goods at California.'s borders and let their own compliant trucks pick up the merchandise for the state's residents.

Besides, Californians can afford all these measures...I think they rank as number nine in the world's economy.

And it doesn't seem to have worked very well, does it?  Possibly pass more laws.  Maybe a law not allowing people to breathe in; they can only breathe out.  Or fine people and animals every time they pass gas.  That would make as much sense as what's going on now.

OOOOOOOO, I know.  No more limousines allowed or private aircraft.  Small cars only.

Did you read my post?  It said it would be far worse without their pollution-control laws.  They have a booming population, but they also have a combination of weather and topography that often traps the worst air right at the population centers.

No surprise, then, that CA is at the forefront for air pollution controls in the US.  They are the canary in the coal mine for the whole country.

What would your remedy be?  "Well, these environmental regulations don't seem to be working because there's still pollution, so let's just remove ALL of them and just not worry about it!"

They have people and industries fighting regulation over there, just like the rest of the country.  So every regulation is a compromise between those who demand clean air and those who demand the right to pollute.  It's just that because of their local climate and topography they have had to draw the line a little closer to clean air.

C'mon, it's not an either or; have oodles of regulationjs that regulate our entire lives, or have no regulations at all.  That does seem to be the dem argument, at times, though.

IMO, all of the regulations in California don't seem to be accomplishing what they want.  I'll admit that there are a lot of people smarter than I am who could possibly figure out how to fix what may need to be fixed, but not to needlessly restrict whatever.  I really7 am sick to death of ou8r govt regulating shat doesn't need to be regulated.  Heck hil's wanted to not just regulate; she wanted to close the coal mines.  Ridiculous!!!

The regulations ARE working, in that they are keeping things from getting "much worse".  The process is working in that the tug-of-war between polluters and everyone else is resulting in a compromise, just like everywhere else.

In CA, the compromise is leaning further away from polluters than elsewhere in the US because their local conditions mandate it.  LA smog was legendary a couple of decades ago.  It was so bad that CA decided they *had* to do more to contain pollution.

The OP seems to suggest that CA is being ineffective or hypocritical in terms of pollution controls, but neither is the case.
