Does anyone else think mixed martial arts as I think it's called, basically where two people in a cage beat the shizz out of each other by kicking, wrastlin', apparently humping, at least that's what it looks like,...anyone think mma is barbaric and different from traditional boxing? Or am I just old fashioned? I mean there just seems to be something fundamentally different about say Butterbean and Mike Tyson.

If you want to talk about "barbaric," you mention Mike Tyson who literally bit an opponent's ear off during a boxing match.

MMA is no more (or less) "barbaric" than boxing. With boxing, almost all your punches are aimed at the opponent's head, which can cause brain trauma. With MMA, you take fewer punches to the head.

Ya maybe Tyson wasn't the best example. Except for that lowpoint though, he exhibited extreme talent. I just don't see that in the MMA people in the cage at least. Just seems like a brawl, not a sport. (Which is not to say there haven't been boxing matches that were pure brawls).

I disagree. You can throw two drunken sailors in a bar to fight, and that would be a brawl. MMA involves intense training, strategy and discipline. It involves thinking on the fly. It requires a high level of endurance. The fighters who don't have these things are doomed to fail.

Let's say your facing an opponent who is an excellent striker. How do you avoid his strikes? How can you lull him enough to take him down to a ground game? What wrestling holds is he susceptible to?

That kind of thing.

You know, I'm still not totally into MMA. I mean, I'll never buy a PPV or DVDs or anything like that. But I've learned to appreciate the sport. I've been exposed to it because two Hawaii fighters - Max Holloway and Angela Lee - are MMA champions, and everyone here talks about them all the time, especially Max. Max is fighting in the main event on tomorrow's UFC PPV.

I think there should be a tag team division in MMA, where if you get in trouble you can tag out and let your partner come in. That would be fun!

Been a big fan of MMA since the early 00's. Grew up on hockey, don't like the fights-takes away from the game, so my appetite for combat sport was met with MMA. Enjoyed boxing but after seeing MMA it's just too one dimensional for me. Find myself shouting at the match, "kick his legs! take him down!!", LOL.

I have no issues with it morally or politically, two consenting adults agreeing on the ground rules and willingly engaging in non-lethal combat is fine by me. Ethically, I think the promotions take advantage of fighters and they should be more heavily regulated/monitored. Fighters union would help.

Seen about every UFC event and it's evolution from a no-holds barred cage fight to the sport of MMA. I'd much rather have these tough alphas battle for entertainment and prize money than prove themselves in some bar, on the street or inevitably in prison.

MMA has come a long way since it beginning. It's heavily regulated and only those with actual skills are allowed to fight.
