Isn't much of the Mormon religion based on some gold tablets found and that could only be read by a life long con man

True, but it's still just a variation of Christianity.

I forgot about a few new religions in India in the 20th century: check out U.G. Krishnamurti, Ramana Maharshi, and Meher Baba.  Meher Baba's religion has a few million followers, and he wrote a couple of books in the mid-20th century that his worshipers take as scriptures.
Interesting. I guess I wouldn't call that a religion, or rather an organized religion, but only new age talk (though prior to the more recent new age stuff). It's definitely interesting though and seems inclusive and positive.

I suppose, but that could describe any religion started by a charismatic founder within the last 200 years or so.

Meher Baba?  Yeah, as far as I can tell, he talked the talk and walked the walk.
