Here's another aspect...maybe if we stayed out of the ME the wealthier ME nations will step up to the plate.

WE don't need a ME NATO when we end being NATO. Let them do it and we can offer guidance and NOTHING more.

Sorry maybe I'm growing soft in my old age but we don't need to risk the lives of young Americans in combat to do that.

I'm morphing into a "worry about ourselves first, kindda guy".

Oil is not the principle reason  My first answer was the more important reason we have to be engaged  ISIS is a cancer and it is spreading  We can not simply play defense at home and clean up the blood and bodies in the street  We have to take the fight to the enemy and kill them off!

I don't totally disagree but we can do it from afar. Troops on the ground? I'm a harder sell on that then I used to be and I think what you propose at some point will involve that.

How's that been working for us?

Since 9/11 US intervention in the middle east has done nothing but make the terrorism situation 1000 times worse.

Should we double down on what has failed?

Or should we start thinking more strategically about the effect an aggressive foreign policy has on US security?

Pulling our small number of troops out Syria doesn't equate to either of these. You can still check ISIS and address them as threat without becoming bogged down in Syria (particularly since they're a transnational threat). And if Russia and Iran become more deeply involved in Syria, then they're the targets of ISIS instead of us (e.g., recent ISIS attacks in Iran), which could lead to some rapprochement with both states at least on the issue of terrorism.

True statement but with one caveat, Russia does not play nice when attacked and they know this.  Not sure you know but when Russia retaliates they not only target the enemy but their families too.  It is as nasty as it can get when they poke the bear.  Unlike us they have nothing to restrain their retaliation.

That's an even better point. As I'm typing this I'm thinking what about all that Iraqi oil that we were supposed to get? Who controls that? Was I wrong in recalling Trump saying that he wanted to take control of the oil away from ISIS? Meaning all those lives lost over this and we've gained very little.

That's fine, but it's not stopping terrorist attacks in Russia:

I think Trump should use his Russia connections to get them to play nice. Cheesy

Seriously, though, I agree that we should never have gone into that worthless country to begin with. Civil war? Let them all kill each other until no one's left.

However, I don't think we should just bow to Putrid's wishes like a lapdog. We should pull out of Syria, but not before dropping one of those huge bombs on Syria's capital as a goodbye present.
