I do a mixture of both, too. I tend to stick with my favorite brands on certain things, but when it comes to general merchandise that I don't care much about, I'll go with whatever.

Items I must have in my fridge or pantry:

Chobani yogurt; 1) apricot, 2) red raspberry, 3) blueberry

San Pellegrino sparkling fruit beverages; 1) grapefruit, 2) orange, 3) blood orange, 4) lemon

Hellman's mayonnaise

Heinz ketchup

Spicy deli mustard

Black olives

Bread and butter pickles

Grandma's pickle relish

97% lean ground turkey

Variety of beans

Vine ripe tomatoes

Vidalia onions

Granola

Frozen red raspberries

Good unground coffee

2% milk

Quick meals we make often:

Chimichangas

English muffin pizzas

Pan fried chicken, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots

BBQ chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, baking powder biscuits

Deli chicken or deli turkey sandwiches

Lots of seasonal fruit

NOTE: My wife bakes the best pies and cookies,
and we have a world class pastry shop in our town.

We also eat more than our fair share of ice cream.

Most of the time I buy store brand, particularly in canned vegetables, sauces, etc.  I shop a lot by price, and I shop at Wal0Mart to also get the best price for the same product.  When we first moved to town a compared prices on the exact same items at Walmart, Albertsons and Winn Dixie.  Walmart came out as the best buy, and I've stayed with them ever since.  I'm still alive.   Grin

On edit.  I forgot to say that when we first moved here, my oldest son came to visit, and went grocery shopping with me at Walmart.  At that time, he was working as a butcher (or whatever they're called now) at a big chain in another city.  He looked at the meat, and he said that it looked like very good quality and gave his approval.

Both. Depends on the item. Some store brands like Kirkland (Costco), Wegman's and Trader Joe's are equal to if not better than the name brands.

I usually buy store brand except for toothpaste and mouthwash, always name brand on those.

Food I usually have to buy store brand. I have some pretty bad food allergies and a lot of name brand will make me feel sick. Take chicken, I can't eat one bite of a Tyson chicken without having a bad allergy attack but I can eat Meijer brand chicken without a problem.

Not sure if it's the same in America but when I had a job involving a lot of factory visits I learned about supermarket brands.

Many of them are EXACTLY the same as brand name stuff.

On one product line, I saw the fitters changing over the feed to the cardboard boxes in to which washing powder was going.

Only that feed changed, and the small hopper holding the fragrance.

On went the line, instead of the well known brand it was now Tesco Own Brand, same soap, slightly different smell.

I saw similar dozens of times.

Under Communism, it's the exact opposite.
