Whenever there is a story about a us serviceman doing something out of line, getting caught and punished for it, I'm reminded that rarely do you see this in other nations. Is it because they are never doing these bad things, or because they are never punished.

You never read stories about bad/corrupt Mexican police. But travel there and it is horrific.

I suspect our police are on par with most of the worlds modern police forces. That said, I suspect most police forces to not deal with what our cops deal with in some of our cesspool sections of large cities.

I think there are two different issues here.

Our cops do some messed up stuff.

The rest of the world for the last 15 years at least has had a policy of ridiculing America at all costs.

The first thing I wondered when reading the article was, "Why did she leave her home after hearing the noise and calling the police?"  Why didn't she let them handle it completely?  I have no idea if the police shot too quickly, but that will be discovered after the investigation is complete.

It was clearly her fault .. How dare she speak to the police while wearing her pajamas ..

Another one going around the world.

Your police are becoming the butt of jokes.

Is this one big news there?

I expect the usual suspects will be along telling us how cops are naturally jumpy when confronted by unarmed, pyjama-clad blonde yoga teachers.

Scary stuff.

Any british policeman dropped into the middle of say any of the worst 20 US cities would be eaten alive in about ten minutes.

This is a sad story and we probably will not ever know the details underlying it as there is no body cam footage. This sort of thing will not stop until we start putting the liability on the individual officers involved, rather than on the city and the taxpayer. Police should be held to the same standards as private citizens regarding their ability to use force.

This is a symptom of a much larger problem with law enforcement. There needs to be a shift in focus away from policing people and toward a model based strictly on defending individual rights and liberties.

And we will gain so much by doing so. For one perhaps we will start to reverse the trend below.

As you can see, the focus on the war on drugs has taken scarce resources away from solving real crimes against people and property and shifted them to policing lifestyle choices, with an eye toward raising revenue rather than protecting and serving people.

This has made it easier for murderers and rapists to go free. With all of our advancements in technology and surveillance, our modern approach fails compared to the 1960's. And that is because today the police are distracted from their core duty- which is to protect people and property.

Shifting these resources back into investigating these sorts of crimes would make our communities safer.

"In the first place, the dichotomy between "theoretical" and "practical" is a false one. In economics, all arguments are theoretical. And, since economics discusses the real world, these theoretical arguments are by their nature "practical" ones as well." M Rothbard

Possibly.

However, our police operate in such a different manner that it is probably not a valid comparison.

Boot on the other foot, using similar generalised sneering stereotypes, any US company put in to a British force would be suspended without pay or jailed in five minutes flat.

yes it's for real, the city has even released a statement about it.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/17/us/minneapolis-woman-killed-by-police/index.html

the thing that's a bit weird is that 2 officers answered the call & both of their body cams were turned off??? why the hell should an officer be able to turn off a body cam?

It's as if they knew that they were going to do something incriminating.
