Interesting question. I think the cost of movies (at theaters) will come down to better compete with online movie services such as NetFlix. Like most industries, the movie theaters are adapting to the market and are now offering better movie-watching experiences such as reclining seats, alcohol service and other amenities.

Disney is going to start their own streaming service, and so is DC Comics and CBS. I expect this trend to continue. The WWE Network was sort of ahead of its time, and it's a great subscription service.

It seems all industries except for healthcare are eliminating cost and inefficiency and linking producers closer to consumers. So cost comes down.

Those of us who've had any dealings with the music biz have been adjusting to this for years.  Decades.

Musicians used to have to go through the industry gate-keepers, who throttled supply, controlled advertising and venues, and took the lions share of the earnings.

Now, they lose earnings from sales (because nobody buys albums or songs anymore) but they control their own access to fans.  They can charge premiums for accessories to their music -- shows, events, merch, etc.  This cuts out the middle-man, but the musicians are still making a living.  In some ways, it's much better than before.

Whatever the market determines it to be.

I doubt that. The cost of alcohol doesn't go down in bars because people can drink at home. There's a service that's still valuable. A movie in a movie theater is quite a different experience than watching it on a tv screen, no matter how large.

True, and there is always the desire to see movies as soon as they come out.  The 1st weekend of a movie release determines how successful the movie is.  Music is a different story.  You can listen to music on Alexa, Pandora and other sources without purchasing it.

For music, the records will be more like advertisement for the concerts which will be where the money will be. It will behoove the singers to make their concerts unforgettable experiences.

Yep you don't have to hear the load BS from assholes all around you in a movie theater and their cell phones.  At home you can stop the move make your own popcorn get a pop and start the movie with out missing anything.  As my wife likes saying I can buy 10 movie all the popcorn and pop I like and hear all of the movies.  For what it would cost for one movie at a theater.  That and we don't have to drive home.  Grin

But this discussion focuses on the future. And in the future, first-run movies will be made available directly to your home via subscription service or online PPV.

Today, you don't have to physically buy a comic book. You can download it to your iPad the very day it comes out. In fact, I get it before the comic book stores even open for business.
