I have seen comments...mostly negative....about Ayn Rand. But , I was curious to know if anyone here was influenced by her. I was very much so for several years. Today , as an Evangelical Christian , she is contrary in her beliefs to most of what I believe. Yet , even today , bits and pieces slip through  , probably because I read Atlas Shrugged so many times ( 6 or 7 ).

I struggled through that dreary piece of nasty daydreaming again recently.

She influenced me towards thinking that inhumane, malevolent people can have successful careers as novelists even when they can't write.

Interesting ! As I stated, her ideas, ln the most part now, are not mine. But, l still find her writings, her novels generally , and Atlas Shrugged in particular, to be masterpieces, But your reaction would be understandable : sort of my reaction to Das Kapital or Mein Kampf

6 or 7 times???  I barely made it through the Cliffs notes. I consider her a cigarette-sucking old fraud.

I assume that you have not read Das Kapital,  if you think it would cause revulsion or disdain.

On Mein Kampf,  right with you brother.

I actually plowed through Das Kapital about fifty years ago. And it confirmed my anti-Socialist views .

It's an analysis,  not a prescription.

In that respect it's rather like "wealth of nations".

Like a manufacturing expert and a cavalry soldier commenting upon the same tank, neither is wrong, even though they say different things.

You may dislike the implications of what Marx says but it's economically and politically literate.

It's likely that when he says he's "plowed through" Das Kapital that what he's actually read of it doesn't even amount to "plowed through" cliff notes. I've met his kind many many times and what they actually knew of the book would not fill a single square of toilet paper, as for Mein Kampf he probably only just knows of it. He just wanted in his unsubtle way to insinuate that Marx was the exact equivalent to Hitler.

As for "Atlas Shrugged" I've read it thoroughly and it's a dreary piece of writing, to say nothing about the prejudices it's trying to defend.

I agree with you Limey, she's no writer.

Similar here. She's an incredible writer. And many of her ideas are valid, most are interesting, some are neither, just like any philosopher. The difference is, she makes her philosophy real by putting it into novels, which opens her up to criticism from all sides. Unfortunately too, it's a very naunced philosophy that's easy to misunderstand, like most of the posters in this thread. The so-called "standard philosophers", like Kant, Descartes, etc. were just as opinionated and subjective. They just wrote using the lingo of philosophy which covers up that fact.

Nah, two things.

1. She writes like someone with severe bowel trouble passes yesterday's 18 ounce steak.

2. Her ideas are basically that some people deserve more freedom than others.

That's about it.

Wouldn't wipe my arse with her nasty nonsense.
