It is fiction which certain self-loathing underachievers postulate to be fact.
They are looking for an excuse to take more than they earn or deserve,
but they would like to think that excuse to be a logical, rational reason.

It is not. It is dreck. Her "objectivism" is little more than a thinly veiled
attempt to give license to those who would steal and want to feel good about it.
It is not really a philosophy any more than was the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act.

If he had said ".... to give a licence..." then yes.

In the sentence as posted, probably "license" is correct.

Unless I have remembered this pub quiz classic wrongly.

I haven't had a chance to practise this sort of thing.

I haven't, in other words, had a practice.

It may well be that I need to swop each "c" *with each "s".

It's not complex. It's selfishness writ large. Plain and simple.
And you're completely wrong. It's called rational self interest. You and others take the easy route and focus on the selfishness part, leaving out the rational part. The rational part makes all the difference. Rational means one has to recognize that others have a claim to their own existence too so you cannot just barrel over them like you seem to think. I've always thought of her philosophy akin to the golden rule.

How would you summarise her rejection of altruism then?
Altruism is the belief that others are entitled to your work, actions, life, etc. simply because they're there. And that you have no right to complain. So for example, and it's a subtle point really, if there's a sick child, altruism would say that child's family has a right to your money to help them with their medical bills because the child exists and is sick. And if the state implemented laws about this, you'd be required by law to give that family money. To me that's a form of slavery. Under Rand's philosophy that's wrong, but it's entirely right and moral that if you freely choose to donate to that family there's nothing wrong with that.

It's the compulsion part that she objects to and makes all the difference. Most people get hung up on the sick child part...what kind of heartless selfish youknowhat wouldn't help a child. That misses the point. It's being forced to help that's the problem.

She influenced me towards thinking that inhumane, malevolent people can have successful careers as novelists even when they can't write.

That's assuming that you are the only person responsible for your good fortune and that is a scurrilous lie! which all reactionary "philosophies" are based on. Without the rest of society and everything it's done for you from the day you were born, you'd still be living in caves, eating the uncooked rotting flesh that stronger predators would leave behind. You'd be little more than a hairless ape. You owe society a great deal that helping others less fortunate doesn't even begin to repay.

There's one that took me by surprise:

"When I die I hope to go to Heaven, whatever the hell that is."

That's uncharacteristically witty but I guess it's just the broken clock syndrome.

This reminds me of something Warren Buffett said.  (I like old Warren, even though he is an atheist.  He is a benevolent, non-evangelical atheist who troubles no one with his beliefs and is willing to let others have theirs without comment from him.  I respect that.)

Warren Buffett favors a progressive income tax.  He favors inheritance taxes that include a reasonably generous exemption (current one is an estate of about $5.5 million, I think.)  He said once, and this is a paraphrase, something very much akin to what you just posted.  It went something like this: "To those  who object to paying income taxes because they're self made successes I would say, move to Bangladesh or Russia or some place like that.  Start over with whatever you started with here.  And you'll find out just how much being in the USA contributed to your "self made success."

So even though I do think you (Bowhunter) are (with all due respect) a conceited, thin skinned, asshole, I do agree with you on many things.  This is but one.  There have been others.

Sieg Heil,
Elmer "Bonehead Theologian" Fudd
