Democrats as bad as Republicans on the DACA Folks?

Quote:
Ten years ago, a narrow consensus was forged in Washington, if only briefly. Its architects were Edward Kennedy and John McCain. Their carefully crafted legislation created a new temporary work visa, established an electronic data base for employers to check employees’ work status, and earmarked money for border enforcement. It also provided a path to citizenship for an estimated 11.6 million illegal immigrants, provided they paid a fine and back taxes, met English and civics requirements, and stayed on the right side of the law.

President George W. Bush signaled his support.

Quote:
On June 6, 2007, Sen. Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat, introduced an innocuous-sounding rider to the McCain-Kennedy bill. Its official description was “an amendment to sunset the Y-1 non-immigrant visa program after a 5-year period.” As everyone in the Senate understood, this was a “poison pill” designed not to shore up the bill, but sink it. Dorgan got his way, too. The amendment passed 49-48, essentially killing comprehensive immigration reform.

Kennedy was incensed. He’d implored Dorgan and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid not to do it. McCain felt particularly sandbagged by Obama, who’d inserted himself into the legislative negotiations uninvited, wrangled a concession he wanted, then voted with Dorgan. McCain assumed Obama didn’t want George W. Bush or himself — the man Obama expected to face in 2008 — to get credit for immigration reform.

So not only did Obama and the rest of the democrats fail to properly provide a path to documented status for these folks and many others when they had filibuster-proof control of the legislature early in Obama's term, a handful of them sabotaged reform late in the Bush term.

Sure, it wasn't as politically acceptable as it is now.  But when they call the Trump decision to follow the guidance of the constitution "Cruel", etc. let's not forget that some in their own party carried out the cruelty of purposely blocking any fix and then failing, later, to pass a fix and, finally, Obama himself waiting years to put DACA into place by executive order.  Why was he so cruel, to leave them in limbo, like that?

Some other interesting bits from the article:

Quote:
Instead of responding to this overture in a spirit of compromise, Democrats chose vitriol and name-calling, their default position in the Trump era. Luis Gutiérrez, an Illinois congressman, called White House Chief of Staff John Kelly a “disgrace to the uniform he used to wear” over DACA. Remember last summer when every Democrat and most of the media went medieval on Trump for picking a fight with a Gold Star family? Well, John Kelly is a Gold Star dad, too. Luis Gutiérrez never wore the uniform.

Is it OK to speak like this about a gold star father?

It nearly cost Trump the election when he mistreated a gold star family.  Will it even garner Gutierrez any major coverage?

Then there is this:

Quote:
For sheer demagoguery, it was hard to top Bernie Sanders. Hillary Clinton’s erstwhile rival had this to say: “Trump’s decision on DACA is the ugliest and most cruel decision ever made by a president of the U.S. in the modern history of this country.”

When one considers Woodrow Wilson re-segregating the federal workforce or FDR interning 110,000 Japanese-Americans who committed no crime, the thought occurs that this is possibly the most ignorant utterance by a U.S. senator in the modern history of this country.

He can't really be that ignorant, can he?

I think some have a difficult time being consistent. They will scream there is nothing wrong with a gun registry, as it would never be used in any form for confiscation

In the next breath, they will scream about trump using data from the daca program to enforce them and current laws.

A mostly valid criticism of a perceived Democratic double-standard. I really only take issue with the following...

"It nearly cost Trump the election when he mistreated a gold star family."

His base LOVED him for it. I would venture to say it didn't cost him a single vote.

For too long have we sat under the thumb of mankind! The time has come to *oppose* that thumb!

I guess I was relying on polls that, in this particular campaign at least, were largely unsuccessful in predicting outcomes.  The polls swung hard in favor of Clinton and away from Trump -- I watched the fivethirtyeight analysis many times a day for basically the whole summer and up to election day.  Before the democrat convention, Trump was actually ahead in some respects (they had three "chance of winning" maps: one was "if the election were held today", one was "what would happen on election day" based solely on polling data, and the last was "what would happen on election day, based on polls AND historical data", I forget which one Trump pulled ahead in after the republican convention, but it was at least one of them), according to that site's analysis. The shift was massive following the democrat convention, during which Trump's reaction on the Khans was one of the most covered aspect.  Now, some of that was surely the falling of the GOP convention bump, but a lot can surely be blamed on the Khan statements.

TL;DR: My point was based on polling analysis that was largely flawed.  So ya, you may be right.  Either way, it was filled with consequences in terms of media treatment.  Consequences that Gutierrez is not getting.

To try to provide legal status to a group of people that would otherwise be in legal limbo with no legal status, but very little chance of any real enforcement.

Like saying "Anyone else concerned with the cruelty of  leaving so many bank robbers in a state of uncertainty and worry as to what sentence the judge will give them?"
