Bye bye fossil fuels!  Bye!

Bye to Arabian and Russian influence!!  Bye!

I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

Tidal energy site in Orkney in hydrogen 'first' - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-41257407

Tidal energy is nothing new. Experimentation with Tidal based power plants date back to the 1920s. Other uses date back before the end of the first millennium.

Quote:
Now a day's tidal power is knocking the future for electricity production. The use of tidal power originated in around 900 AD when early civilizations constructed tide mills. These mills used the force of the tide to turn a waterwheel, which in turn was used to grind grain into flour [1][2]. Britain and France are using the tidal power concept since 11th century for milling grains [3][4]. The first study of large scale tidal power plants was initiated by the US Federal Power Commission in 1924

There are perennial calls for a hydrogen-based energy sector.  I think that idea is being overcome by events -- battery tech, distributed solar, and tesla cars are all demonstrating that a solar-based energy sector is viable.  The primary objection to hydrogen has been lack of infrastructure, and the renewable-electric approach sidesteps that.

Having said that, I do believe there are good applications for hydrogen as a portable energy storage medium.

It's amazing how it takes so long for a better fuel source to become feasible.

This is different.

It's not that the hydrogen comes from tidal, it's the end of two things.
Firstly, the end of intermittency in wind energy

Secondly, hydrogen on tap is an end to the fight against battery vehicles.

Although as FC says, the rapid development of battery tech may make it moot.

The first automobile was invented in Scotland.  It was a truck and it was ELECTRIC!  Yup, first car/carriage ever made was electric and were still using smog machines.  Huh?

& we are still using about the same batteries as they were then.

Nonsense gibberish.  Battery technology has tacken huge leaps and bounds.

I fly Radio controlled airplanes and have dabbled in electric RC flight as soon as it was vaguely feasible.  That was like 20 years ago using big heavy Ni-cad (Nickel-Cadmium) packs.  They were heavy, didn't put out sustained watts and you'd get a power decrease towards end of your flight time.

Now we're using Lipo batteries (Lithium Polymer).  They put out sustained power and much more of it.

Here's the current fully electric beast I'm playing with. It's considered a "giant" because it's bigger than the typical sized RC plane, about 7' wing span.
