Ex-Hillary Adviser: Dems Must Double Down on ‘Identity Politics’

By: Tony Lee
11 Sep 2017

In what may be music to the ears of former White House Chief Strategist Bannon, former Hillary Clinton adviser Zerlina Maxwell urged Democrats to double down on “identity politics” during an MTP Daily discussion on Monday.

Maxwell said on MSNBC that “identity politics need to be at the center of what the Democrats need to do going forward” even though Bannon told the American Prospect‘s Robert Kuttner that Republicans would “crush” Democrats if they become the salad-bowl party.

The Democrats,” Bannon told Kuttner, “the longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em. I want them to talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.”

New York Times reporter Nick Confessore pointed out that it is impossible for Democrats to be a majority party “absent a coalition of a substantial number of working-class white voters.” He pointed out that every Democrat who was won the presidency, including former President Barack Obama, has won over working-class white voters in places like Macomb County, Michigan. Confessore said that if Democrats don’t appeal to these voters, they will continue to be a “minority party for years to come.”

Stu, kind of like you then. You play identity politics from the other side of the aisle all day long here. Maybe the white supremacists like you and the identity-politics-all-day-long crowd from the left can meet in the middle and annihilate each other like anti-matter and matter.

With only identity politics, a.k.a. the race card, the woman card, and the Hispanic card, democraps will only get the same votes as they got anyway.  Their long-term vision is permanent political power by converting the US into a latin American country by the importation by whatever means necessary of tens of millions of poor Mexicans.  If Trump can get control of the RINOs, that avenue will be closed.  And, the woman card ploy is fading - in spite of the most horrendous woman card demagoguery during the election, promoted relentlessly by the lib media, Trump won 53% of the white female vote.  They've also finally managed to alienate their historic base, white working class men.

I would pay money to see that!

But I have to agree fully with your broader point. A large contingent of the right has fully embraced the identity politics playbook, which could have easily been predicted.

And Stu and many others here have swallowed the poison pill of identitarian politics.

It's been fascinating to watch the rise of the white male SJW. The fruits of Pat Buchanan's paleoconservative nationalism have come home to roost.

It seems to have started with a focus on the economics of immigration and the welfare state but has evolved into a project tasked with saving Western European "culture" and stopping the so-called "white genocide."

So yes, in my view this is white nationalism through and through.

I'd be impressed if you applied that same analysis to the right, and their peculiar form of identity politics which is centered around white working class men.

How is it that you do not spot the symmetry in these projects?

And regarding the left's "long term vision," what do you say to the idea that there is a trade off between immigration and support for welfare spending- that "progressive dilemma" I mentioned before?

If this trade off is real then the project you speak of regarding a permanent tilt to the left is not likely to happen.
