Entirely wrong.

I think there are sides in this set of conversations and you're mixing up the factions on your opponents' side.

Evolution is a discrete function independent of the origin of life.

Seriously, this is a thing. It's why many Christians can accept evolution.

God made life, life develops via evolution, which has God initiated.

That's not too unacceptable in certain Christian circles.

On the contrary, my education was very much about thinking outside the box.

You forget that I was educated in Wales.

The nonconformist tradition runs deep.

It seems to me that you are in a box, one marked "orthodoxy".

Can you read and speak the Welsh language?  Color me impressed if you can.  I find it very attractive to look at but almost as incomprehensible as Arabic squiggles.  Seems like WAY too much usage of the letter “y” and incredibly long words to me.

But even if I had known you were educated in Wales, I would not have known to associate that with non-confomity.  I bet Mr. Wolf (nor many others) would have, either.

Yes... It's niche knowledge.

Welsh contrariness goes back a long way.

Nag ydy, d'wyn ddim siarad yr iath Nhymraeg.

My grandmother's generation were non-English speaking in their childhood. There was a determination to eradicate or at least marginalise the non-English languages in Britain during Victoria's reign and later. It was largely successful in Eire and Scotland, but not so much in Wales.

However, it had an effect, and her generation and my father's felt that Welsh was something to be embarrassed about. It took a hit in the 1920s to the 60s but has made a remarkable resurgence.

I speak enough to be polite before switching to English.

On the occasional long stay in Wales, a week or more, I tune in and become much better able to understand.

Why is it called welsh rabbit? Is it because the Welsh were so poor that they couldn't afford rabbit meat?

That's a shame, I think.  I grew up in an area where French was a very common second language among people who also spoke English, and I had neighbors whose parents were bi-lingual but didn't want their kids to be speakers of French for that same reason.  (Parents might also have wanted to  have a way to speak to each other without prying ears overhearing, too.)

Many of those who spoke both fluently spoke what I came to call "Frengllish" with each other.  They would lapse into French for a few words, then English, then back, etc. without even being aware of it.  It was, essentially, all just one language to them.  But when they spoke to us English-only speakers, they used only English.  Sometimes I knew they were talking about stuff they didn't want us English-only speakers to know about - when they spoke only French to each other.

There are definitely parts of some cultures that shouldn't be preserved, but I think language is definitely one of those parts that should be.

Best guess is that it's a joke that stuck.

Like superstitions conveyed by dusty old books, otherwise useless.

What do you think of the following?

"Do not go gentle into that good night

Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Don't cheat! No google peeking!

I like Dylan and would like to live in Llamedos.

.... That poem was on my high school reading list.
In Wales.
