"The Orville" - super sci-fi or just silliness?

Has anybody seen "The Orville" yet? It's a new Fox show created by Seth McFarlane of "Family Guy" fame. The show is very Star Trek-esque. It sort of both pays tribute and parodies the original Star Trek series.

I've seen the first two episodes and......I LOVE IT!

I have to admit, I have seen most episodes from the original 1960s series, but haven't watched any of the sequel series (Next Generation, Deep Space 9, etc.). So I'm not about to compare "Orville" with any of the recent Star Trek efforts.

But just taking the show on its own merits, I find it very fun and enjoyable. There are serious parts and humorous parts (but not wacky parts, as in "Family Guy").

I think my favorite character so far is Alara, the young security officer who is an alien with super strength. She's inexperienced and innocent, yet spunky and determined. She gets the main storyline in Episode 2, when command of the ship is suddenly thrust upon her.

Funny lines: "Woof" and "Thanks, dick."

The entire cast is pretty fun, and the uniforms and effects are sharp looking. I hope this show is a success because I really enjoy it. It's a sci-fi show that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I read that the producers of the show are aiming it to be similar to the original Star Trek TV series: From show to show, you never know what to expect. Some episodes will be deadly serious, some will be heavy on humor, others will have social commentary, etc. Sounds like a plan! Smiley

Yes, it definitely looks like a parody of both star trek and star wars (that robot looks a lot like c3po).

The trailer seems fun but that kind of humor can get old very fast, depending on how it's handled.

I watched the first episode. The sci fi wasn't very good, and neither was the humor. So I had a hard time telling which it was trying to be. That said, it was entertaining enough I'll give it a couple more tries. But something has to stand out to keep me coming back.

I'm a trekie and watched the 1st 2 episodes.. I enjoyed them.  They say the 3rd episode is controversial, something to do with sex reassignment.  Whatever, it is Hollywood after all, they have to get their sermons in here and there.

I would recommend Episode 3. Yes, it was about sex reassignment, but it was handled very well and presented both sides of the "issue" equally. Plus, it still had doses of humor. I am already growing fond of the main characters.

I am also open to watch "Star Trek: Discovery," but not if I have to subscribe to the CBS streaming service.

I think they're putting on the show on CBS for the first episode or 2. But after that, you need to subscribe to the CBS streaming service to watch the show. But they'll re-run the show on the regular network a week or two later.

Interesting.  I'll just wait the extra week.  Another half human/Vulcan first officer.  How original. Huh  The good news is that it's Sasha from Walking dead.  She seems to be the main character so far in this series.   Those Klingons keep evolving at a fast rate. No longer humans with a good tan and funky eyebrows like the original.
