"Here's How Breitbart And Milo Smuggled Nazi and White Nationalist Ideas Into The Mainstream"

Quote:
"A cache of documents obtained by BuzzFeed News reveals the truth about Steve Bannon’s alt-right “killing machine.”

In August, after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville ended in murder, Steve Bannon insisted that "there's no room in American society" for neo-Nazis, neo-Confederates, and the KKK.

But an explosive cache of documents obtained by BuzzFeed News proves that there was plenty of room for those voices on his website.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, under Bannon’s leadership, Breitbart courted the alt-right — the insurgent, racist right-wing movement that helped sweep Donald Trump to power. The former White House chief strategist famously remarked that he wanted Breitbart to be “the platform for the alt-right.”

The Breitbart employee closest to the alt-right was Milo Yiannopoulos, the site’s former tech editor known best for his outrageous public provocations, such as last year’s Dangerous f*g**t speaking tour and September’s canceled Free Speech Week in Berkeley. For more than a year, Yiannopoulos led the site in a coy dance around the movement’s nastier edges, writing stories that minimized the role of neo-Nazis and white nationalists while giving its politer voices “a fair hearing.” In March, Breitbart editor Alex Marlow insisted “we’re not a hate site.” Breitbart’s media relations staff repeatedly threatened to sue outlets that described Yiannopoulos as racist. And after the violent white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August, Breitbart published an article explaining that when Bannon said the site welcomed the alt-right, he was merely referring to “computer gamers and blue-collar voters who hated the GOP brand.”

These new emails and documents, however, clearly show that Breitbart does more than tolerate the most hate-filled, racist voices of the alt-right. It thrives on them, fueling and being fueled by some of the most toxic beliefs on the political spectrum — and clearing the way for them to enter the American mainstream.

It’s a relationship illustrated most starkly by a previously unreleased April 2016 video in which Yiannopoulos sings “America the Beautiful” in a Dallas karaoke bar as admirers, including the white nationalist Richard Spencer, raise their arms in Nazi salutes.

These documents chart the Breitbart alt-right universe. They reveal how the website — and, in particular, Yiannopoulos — links the Mercer family, the billionaires who fund Breitbart, to underpaid trolls who fill it with provocative content, and to extremists striving to create a white ethnostate.

This is a long read but worth it for it helps shine some light on the origins of the alt-right and their links to Bannon and co.

This is not just partisan politics as usual. The alt-right is channeling a dark enlightenment. They see the enlightenment ideas of universal liberty and equality as chimera and welcome a return of the ancien regime- a return to feudalism and monarchy.

The great Liberal project is to combat these ideas and explain how the universal rights of man are necessary for the maintenance of civilization.

I seem to remember in a time long ago and a place not so far away that someone
might have suggested/predicted that you might someday find yourself rightfully
occupying a position more toward what some might call the "libertarian left".

Is that what is happening with you? And if so, might I be the first to welcome you aboard?

Well, I can't answer that with a simple yes or no. It's complicated.

I guess the first thing to say is that I haven't changed my beliefs, really at all. Libertarian ideas have always been "left" of the dial historically. Libertarianism was born in the 20th century out of the ashes of 18th and 19th century liberalism.

So the pedigree is decidedly "left" as opposed to "right."

That's why libertarians tried an alliance with the New Left in the 60's. It seemed like the logical place to go. After all, these were people who were already "liberals" in some loose sense of the word.

But something changed in late 80s and early 90s. Libertarians started courting the right and this new alliance left them with some bed bugs. Liberalism took a backseat to a more nativist, race conscious and identitarian form of libertarianism. This is the period that gave us the Ron Paul Newsletters.

Fast forward to 2005-ish. I keep hearing about Austrian economics, Ron Paul and libertarianism on LNF. I nerd out and jump headlong into this stuff. Reading as many of the "great" works as I can. Most of these books were written in the late 19th century and early 20th. The most formative for me were the books by Mises and Rothbard (young Rothbard mind you).

So from these works I formed a truly classical liberal world view. I learned how liberalism was the great enemy of both forms of collectivism, both left wing and right wing and how these ideologies are so dangerous to the social order.

Later Rothbard, during the Paleoconservative alliance years, reads completely different. He was proto alt-right.

But I didnt know it at the time, I wasnt reading Ron Paul's newsletters. I was reading the great works of economics and political theory. So this stuff was not on my radar.

Fast forward a little later and libertarianism has become a pipeline to the alt right. You have the Mises folks supporting a "blood and soil" alliance with the alt right, in the name of outreach.

This, you might say, was a wake up call to me. And it was to many others in the liberty movement as well. People like Jeffrey Tucker.

It became plain to see that some elements from "right" libertarianism were way too friendly with rightwing collectivism.

So I do distance myself from that and from libertarians such as Hans Hoppe and Lew Rockwell.

But I don't really see that as me going to the left. I see it more as them going to the right. And it's probably more accurate to say I woke up to who these people were and what they had been all along.

I self identity as an anarcho-capitalist or just as a libertarian. I do have a problem with the label, left libertarian. For that refers to a subset of people in libertarianism who take a more Marxist view of things. They support a form of voluntary socialism, whether it be syndicalist, worker owned coops or what have you.

They oppose private property in the means, profit and interest and essentially the entire capitalist system. So that label does not fit me.

I see myself as simply being consistently opposed to collectivism and identity politics, regardless if it is leftwing or rightwing.

This is not hyperbole.

These people are open and honest about wanting a white ethno state. Look into Richard Spencer and Jared Taylor. They are open about their support of this stuff. You can see a room full of people give Milo a Nazi salute. Spencer was in the crowd.

These are the people Breitbart are courting. The evidence is before your eyes.

Perhaps it hits just a little too close to home. It is easier to pretend this is all just left wing hysterics.

It might also be generational. Stu probably does not spend enough time in the corners of the internet where the alt-right have visibility.

But as you point out, he links to articles daily carrying water for rightwing collectivism. So there should be some awareness...

Doubt he even read this article beyond the headline and the first couple lines.

He simply cannot accept that Breitbart courted the neonazis and the racist alt right in order to help spread propaganda.
