Top Republican: Trump made impossible promises on tax reform and spending

Donald Trump promised the American people he would eliminate the federal deficit in a speedy eight years — and somehow do it while raising defense spending, cutting taxes, and leaving large entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare unscathed.

“That can’t happen,” Republican Rep. Tom Cole (OK), who holds a coveted position on the House Budget and Appropriations Committees, said.

“You can’t increase defense spending, which the president proposes, cut taxes, which the president proposes, and leave entitlements untouched, which the president has proposed, and think you are going to have a balanced budget,” Cole said.

In other words, he’s saying what many Republicans have been reticent to admit in recent months: The president has promised the American people the impossible, and in doing so, he’s set Congress up to fail.

Now what happened under Obama?  Did he not double our debt to nearly 20 trillion?

So....it's Obama's fault Trump made mutually exclusive unrealizable claims for tax reform?  Roll Eyes
Or are you just raising "but Obama!" to change the discussion away from something you know you can't handle head on?

I don't believe Obama campaigned on fiscal prudence or balancing the budget, particularly in the aftermath of the Bush recession.  But he sure did bring those Bush deficits down!

I am betting it's the latter.

Trump has made lots of promises Congress can't keep.  And he's going to explode when they fail to do so.

Starting with Obamacare.  I believe Der Fuhrer said, during the campaign, that all we  had to do was make Obamacare "better and cheaper."  He said, I believe, a plan to do just that was almost final, and the transition would be seamless.  I wondered at the time why nobody had thought of "better and cheaper" to start with, but nobody is as smart as the Donald, at least according to the Donald.

Well you know how that went.  Tax "reform" and deficit reduction are headed the same way.  I doubt he'll admit what he finally admitted about healthcare ("Nobody knew it was this complicated!!!") but he might think it.  No matter, just like with the failure of Obamacare repeal and replace, the failure of tax reform will be all Congress's fault, too.  Not a failure of leadership on his part.

But actually the failure on Obamacare is mostly Congress's fault, and almost completely the R side of it.  Their platform was always "delay or repeal, no compromise or tweak."  Then an alleged Republican got the WH and they had both chambers and they had to be something other than the party of "no."

And they can't do it.  Their Congressional "leadership" sucks and WH "leadership" is non-existent.

This is fun.  This is a fun time.

As if he had some sort of magical powers...  Roll Eyes  Haven't you often said that cutting taxes and raising spending can't lead to decreased deficits?  If it worked for Obama, why can't it work again?

Maybe the deficits came, in large part, with a jump in assistance program spending coupled with decreased tax receipts during a recession, and went away, in large part, to the reversal of that trend as such a trend is wont to do if left alone.

The only people I know who ever said anything approaching that are these "Laffer Curve" wackos, and they usually don't advocate spending more as part of their Kool-Aid.

That Republican is right. Trump can't have his cake and eat it, too.

He should cut taxes for all current taxpayers, force the poor to pay taxes themselves and drastically slash the budgets of most federal programs - and eliminating some altogether.

We have to get our spending under control, and the only way to do that is if we all feel some of the pain.

No, I am showing you that we went from 9 trillion to almost 20 trillion under Obama.  Now, here is some news, BOTH parties are responsible for the debt since the Rep party FAILED to reign in Obama's spending spree.  So no one is blameless here, but I suspect you Obama trolls are not honest enough to admit he doubled our debt or you will attempt to marginalize it as you did when we brought it up while he was spending like a whore.

You know our Socialist/Communist poster will NEVER let us cut programs in order to bring down the deficit.
