It wasn't collapsing.  .. Well at least in states that embraced the ACA it wasn't collapsing. Red States on the other hand did everything they could to punish their citizens.

Obamacare is only 'exploding' in red states.

In states with Republican governors, more than 40 million people live in counties with only one insurer. In states with Democratic governors, there are 10.7 million people who live in such counties.

There are two main ways in which Republican governors have been effective in sabotaging Obamacare in their states. The first and most important was by refusing to expand Medicaid.

Governors who chose to expand that program pulled many lower-income people out of the Obamacare insurance pool — people who tend to be less healthy and have higher medical bills on average. By taking this higher-cost population out of the exchanges, they reduced the risk to insurers. Applying this logic inversely, governors who refused to expand Medicaid ended up with a less-healthy mix of people in the exchanges.

Do you have a source for this last paragraph?

Quote:
The other issue is the extent to which states took the initiative to promote Obamacare. Less healthy people generally don’t have to be prodded to buy insurance, since they know they need it. The issue is whether more healthy people buy into the system. Insurers are going to lose money if all the people they insure have serious health problems.

More healthy people probably would (and largely did) buy into the system if the system allowed for them to pay a lower rate for being a lesser risk.

Thanks.  I didn't realize that the link was the source for the whole post.

I wonder where they got their numbers.  I haven't seen it claimed before that folks who qualify for Medicaid (or are near qualification in the states that didn't expand) were less healthy.

I would say that it's reasonable to think that Medicaid recipients who are typically low income would be less healthy than those with greater income participating in health plans affording better coverage.

People such as McCain and McConnell aren't conservatives.

Just because the republican establishment weren't serious about repeal, doesn't make Obamacare a good thing.
Plus, it must not be that good considering how willing you are, to use this as an excuse for changing the name to Trumpcare.

It may be reasonable, but that doesn't make it necessarily true.

Why would people with low income be less healthy?

There was a study done in, I think, Oregon in which there were two groups of people with the same qualifications.  For budgetary reasons, the program could not cover all of them, so I think they did a sort of lottery/random selection sort of system.  So one group got Medicaid coverage and the other group was left to continue to go without coverage.  At the end of the study, the folks that got coverage were found to be, statistically, just as healthy as the group that didn't.
