Untold/Forgotten Stories Of WWll

I have a few short stories of my Grand Father who was in the Navy during WW11

After Pearl Harbor, in which my Grand Father survived , his ship, the cruiser the U.S.S. Honolulu  was sent to defend Alaska from the Japanese.

They were on there way there and somewhere in 'frigged waters' that the ship's propeller stated to give them problems .

The Captain asked for a volunteer to fix the prop. No one, wanted to go into that extremely cold water. Shocked

There was one man who volunteered. That man was my Grandfather.

They had a shot of whisky waiting for him Wink

Great story. Check out my thread. For his Eagle Scout project my son made a documentary about another Pearl Harbor survivor.

My GrandFather was on the Cruiser the U.S.S Honolulu and worked in the engine room

While they were in the Philippines, another sailor relieve my Grandfather 15 mins earlier than he was schedule to.

Right after my GrandFather left a Japanese torpedo hit the engine room area killing the man that relieve my Grandfather

This haunted my Grandfather for the remainder of his life

I bet it did.

There can be a lot of (misplaced) personal guilt that many survivors carry with them after an event like this.
