I'm sure you've heard the old joke about the string
who walks into a bar. It goes something like this:

Quote:
A string walks into a bar, jumps up onto a stool and orders a beer. The bartender
looks down at him and says, "I'm sorry, but we don't serve strings in here."

The string goes outside, walks up to a homeless guy and tells the guy
to pick him up, tie him into a loop and rough him up around the edges.

The string then walks back into the bar,
jumps back up onto a stool and orders a beer.

The bartender walks over, squints down at him and says, "Hey,
aren't you the same string that was just in here a minute ago?"

"Nope," says the string. "I'm a frayed knot."

Now I know that is maybe not the best joke in the world, but I love it.
So does my wife, and years ago when she told me that joke, I told her
that she would have to tell the joke to her mother, whom we both believed
would really love the joke. Well, she did, and my mother-in-law did love it.
So much in fact, that when she went back home, she started telling
everybody the joke. She volunteered at a Catholic Charity gift shop.
She told everyone there. She went to the Senior Center, and told them too.
But she was baffled, she told us over the phone, because most of the people
just stared at her and didn't react to the joke the way she thought they would,
and the rest had a sort of delayed reaction before bursting out in a sort
of self-conscious spasm of quickly repressed laughter. So we asked her
to repeat the joke back to us, which she did almost word for word
until she came to the punch line when the string in her version of the joke
replied to the bartender "I'm afraid sew." I never laughed so hard in my life
as I did when she came to that punch line. I had to hang up my receiver
while my wife explained to her what the problem had been. Then her
dear, departed mother said to her, "How am I going to find all those people?"
"What people?" my wife asked her reflexively, realizing the answer as
she asked the question. "The people who I told the wrong joke" was the reply.

My mother-in-law was a treasure. As goofy as my wife can be,
she can never be that goofy, or at least if she does, it is rarely.

We miss Harriet Ruth Smith Q. every day.

My pleasure, Harry, but be careful of encouraging me.

There are a thousand more where that one came from.

I’ve a strong suspicion we’re related. Your mother in law was a lost sister, or possibly a clone, of my grandmother.

Viva El Presidente!! Viva!!!

And Viva endearingly crazy old ladies!!! Viva!!! Including Ms Crepe!!! Viva!!! (Except she’s only 21).
