Anyone else find this odd

The New York Times' catch slogan is "Holding Power to Account."

The Washington Posts' catch slogan is "Democracy Dies in Darkness."

The two of them feel so strongly about those principles that they block their noble and chivalrous crusades behind pay walls.  Want a little light to shine into that darkness?  That'll be $9.99 a month.

Just interesting in this era of media outlets pursuing profits and something that is driven home every time I click a link on LNF or facebook or from RCP and get the "Subscribe to see this content" page.

I think they're the only two who do it.

Anyone else think that's interesting?

Those newspapers were never free.

Why would they be free now?

CNN isn't free either.  Ever been blocked from reading a CNN article?

Huffington Post?

Slate?

Why would they be free now?  Principles maybe?  The principles they claim to espouse on their banners?

Are they champions of democracy and the disenfranchised as they claim?  Or are they corporations seeking profits?  Can you be both?

What are their principles again?

Texas Tribune is nonprofit and doing quite well; great in-depth reporting. Better than the Dallas Morning News, Austin American-Statesman, etc. who are firing most of their experienced reporters and keeping most of their crappy articles behind a paywall.

Other nonprofit news outlets are also popping up around the country. It's a good model and a way for newspapers, etc. to survive.

One caveat, I do have a subscription to the Wall Street Journal.

Apples to oranges. None of the other media which you mention were ever printed newspapers.

The NYT and the WaPo have always charged people to buy their product. CNN does too,
but they do it via your TV cable subscription which is their primary source of revenue.

Neither of the papers you mention has any obligation to you other than
to deliver the news and other information to do as honestly as possible.
If you had their papers delivered, it might cost you $75+/month. If you subscribe
to each of their services online, it'll cost you only $20. Quite a bargain, isn't it?

Absolutely bama.  I'm not truly criticizing their subscription model.

I'm criticizing their grandiose mission statements that run in opposition to their subscription model.  Said subscription model makes their mission statements seem like delusions of grandeur.

And full disclosure ... I forgot the WSJ because like Demos I also have a subscription so never get their content blocked so forgot about it.  Whoops.  But in fairness to the WSJ ... they don't pretend to be the champions of the disenfranchised or the canaries in the coal mine of democracy.

I understand your point. However, there is a cost to doing business,
and that includes the newspaper business. Maybe you should give the
NYT and the WaPo some credit for evolving into an online presence,
as well as giving them some credit for the reportage that they have done
about the trumP administration, reportage without which we would not
know even a fraction of what we know now about its corruption and collusion.

Texas Tribune maintains significant international overhead from its foreign bureaus? Is this apples to apples content?

Oh yeah.

Heck this morning on facebook I brought up my disgust with yahoo's fake news in their financial section.

James Damore just filed a class action lawsuit against Google, saying it discriminates against white male conservatives

Their opening paragraph:

James Damore, a former Google engineer who was fired in August after posting a memo to an internal Google message board arguing that women may not be equally represented in tech because they are biologically less capable of engineering,

Totally fake news.  Not at all what he said.  One thing I've found very disturbing about the left is how long they've been accepting and cheering fake news.  It was when they started screaming bloody murder about the right doing it that I started to break with them.

You should join me in that fight for truth Vypr.  You're a smart guy.  Could use the help.
